While camping, has a black bear ever wondered into your camp while you are in it?

A couple of times in the western UP. One year we were backpacking in the Porcupine Mtns and there were campsites all along the Lake Superior shore. We camped up on the top of hill. Every night a mother with two cubs would come through and raid all the campsites along the shore. We could follow their progress from the sounds of whistles and pots being banged.

Very likely, yes - but not that I ever noticed.

But when my wife and I got married at my in-laws' cabin on Lake Winnibigoshish, a bear strolled through the yard the morning of our wedding. And when I lived in Duluth in my early twenties, in a big old college house up in the Woodland neighborhood, bears regularly stopped by. One walked across the deck by the living room once, and another time I walked outside to go somewhere and startled one (and the startling was very mutual) - it quickly went up a tree and waited until I left.

I've come upon grizzlies while day-hiking in the Yellowstone backcountry.

Yup at Tower Soudan State Park in Minnesota. I was sitting at the picnic table when I heard a snuffling sound and there was a black bear on all fours, about four feet away from me.

My SO was rummaging around in our food supply in the back of the car and had a bag of marshmallows in his hand. I realize now this was not the thing to do, but I muttered out of the corner of my mouth to my SO, "It's a bear. Give him the marshmallows so he'll leave me alone." My SO replied, "No, I want to eat them tonight."

When I realized I wasn't getting any help from my boyfriend, I just sat there motionless and after a couple of minutes, the bear wandered away. I spent most of the remainder of the camping trip in the car.

Yes in the mid 80's, North of Park Rapids while tenting it for a week. We found out that bears are not fans of Van Halen, even with David Lee Roth. We turned up Hot for Teacher and it took off. But not before shredding a camping box and tent.

Nice! I bet that double bass drum intro scared it pretty good.
