What is the best state to live in?
I live in Maryland and am really tired of here. I'm thinking about moving to Minnesota.
I don't like huge cities, rather suburbs and small towns. But I need to be close to the job market to find a job in finances. I also love snow and I am not affraid of a little cold.
Do you think Minnesota is is a good idea? What state is the best to live in?

The best state to live in is very debatable, but MN has been First or Second on the Morgan Quitno "Most Livable State" list for as long as I can remember.
I like it best out of all the places that I have visited and lived. I am in FL now working on getting back to MN.

I think best really boils down to what your searching for. If you don't like traffic, don't move to a big city. If you don't like cold, well, north would be out of it. Crime? Does that bother you? Stay away from the big crime cities. I think its best to ask yourself what you are looking for, ie.. whats best for you.
Then, ask away in the many forums you can here. Lots of helpful people on city-data. You will then be able to boil down to what areas of the country might suit you the best. Good Luck!!

I don't like traffic, I don't like people and - above all - I hate crime in here. It is just unbelievable! I cannot watch the news, because all they are talking about is murders! I just want to be out of here.
What about you? Why don't you like here?

"Best" is a very relative term
The way your question is framed I think you will get a thousand different answers, probably leaving you even more confused.
You need to determine what type of environment is best for your personality, lifestyle and goals. I will even throw 'environment' into the mix as well. I am an Urbanista who likes, public transportation, cozy neighborhoods, cool (but not cold) winters, mild summers, ethnic diversity, great food, the outdoors and theatre equally, mountains, water and close proximity to an International Airport because I travel a lot. For these reasons I live in San Francisco, CA. It is the "best" place for a person with my temperament and likes.
I have lived in 5 states; NY, OH, AZ, CA and WA. As you can imagine these states are quite different. As a whole I love the geographic diversity of CA, although, the most beautiful place I have ever seen is Sedona, AZ. I left LA for a 20-month stint in Seattle. Being there made me realize how much I love CA and the Bay Area in particular. I moved back and I plan to stay.
Find out what's most important to you and then it will make it easier to choose another state or, more specifically, another city.
Hope this helps.
p.s. If you choose Minnesota, you had better love the cold because you will definitely get your fair share of it.

I've heard many good things about Minnesota and if it wasn't for the cold weather, we might be there ourselves.
I'm curious why you want to leave Maryland. What specifically is the problem for you there if you don't mind me asking?
Thanks.

If you like the outdoors and fishing, Minnesota is the place to be. Its hard to find good paying jobs here if you want to live far away from the big cities in the state. For a new person coming here to live,I would say that the St. Cloud area is nice. Its far enough away from the twin cities but not to far if you need to go there. I drive 50 miles to Minneapolis for work and 50 miles home everyday. I live in the St. Cloud area. I'm in the rural area and drive to the cities to make decent money. Taxes aren't the best but there is a lot to do here. Real Estate taxes can be very high depending on the county. The people outside the twin cities are generally nice. Most communities will welcome you in unless you come here with the attitude that your better than us. If you make fun of us because of the movie "Fargo" you might get a sore shoulder. We do have an accent but not quite like that movie made us look like. Many people that come here to live never want to go back to where there from. Its quiet in the rural areas with very little serious crime. EW

We moved to MN from MD and lived there for 17 years. It was fine for the most part. Then 3 years ago we came back to MD and I have no desire to return-not even to visit. Our 2 kids and grandson still live there. I jokingly say they just don’t know any better.
Many times I heard "we like MN because it has all 4 seasons"... I disagree, it has winter and springsummerfall.
I couldn't take another winter, the driving was horrible - the cold didn't bother me, it just lasted toooooooo long and no sun for weeks at a time.
As for springsummerfall, the temps can vary quite a bit from day to day - that produces lots of storms/tornados. And without consistent temps our pool would only be used a few days a year because it wasn't heated.
We do have some life long friends there, but it's tough to get them to visit us, and we live at the beach , the ocean-not the lake beach! MN's don't want to go anywhere except Up North.
I love the east coast, we have everything – all seasons, mountains, ocean, history, seafood, and genuine people.
I guess for me weather and the ability to be outdoors almost everyday, is important. Yes-summer is hot here, but that only lasts a few months and I live at the beach .
