News release: Minnesota alone trims obesity rates among upper Midwest states

I have to say this surprised me a little bit. I didn't think there was that much difference between Minnesota and its neighboring states but this chart shows that there is something unique here.

25% vs 30% isn't that big of a difference really

If Minnesota continues to reduce its obesity rate while the other upper midwestern states' obesity rates continue to climb, the difference will be much more significant in 5-10 years. Congrats Minnesota! Hope the trend continues.

Is that snark?

I'm sure there is a correlation between being the #1 Bike Friendly City and the drop in obesity. And frankly the politics of the Twin Cities versus the other midwest states.

No i honestly don't find it that big of a deal... the whole "superiority complex" stuff displayed here is too abnormal for me so i find this thread a little strange at times

Facts are facts. It is that simple. Minnesota rates ahead of the other upper midwestern states. Maybe not by a lot at this point, but it is not a superiority complex at all. I don't find a thread comparing these states strange. It might actually do some good and encourage the other states to do a little more to help their citizens reduce obesity.

If you read a 'superiority complex' in a short, factual article citing a statistically significant difference then perhaps the problem is in the interpretation. We should be glad to find strategies for bending downward the growth curve of obesity rates.

I didn't say otherwise i just don't see the big deal.... bragging isn't my thing but if it was i wouldn't brag about a 25% vs 30% obesity rates.. its not a noticeable difference,
Room A has 20 people Room B has 20 people..
Room A has a 25% obesity rate
Room B has a 30% obesity rate
idk about you but when it comes to weight people both rooms would look pretty identical.

The broader point has some validity -- yes, Minnesotans love to brag with stats -- but I suspect you're wrong with respect to the obesity rate. I haven't seen the relevant research, but I'm betting that 5% represents billions of dollars worth of long-term care costs. Your argument is akin to poo-pooing the fact that Minnesota's college attainment rate is 5% higher than Wisconsin's; again, the difference amounts to billions of dollars worth of economic activity.

All those Islamic Somalis that were unbelievably brought to MN. by ignorant groups skew the fat stats.
