Possible job in Red Wing, MN
My husband has an possible job opportunity in Red Wing, MN. I don't know much about the town. Does it have a lot to offer a young family with small children? I really would really love to live in Rochester but that is too far of a commute. Is there a city that is about half way in between the two?

Red Wing is nice. Get a boat and enjoy the river.
Check out Hastings, 20 minutes to the North...another great river town that is 25 minutes South of St. Paul and a great place to raise a family.

It's great if you like sailing or messing about on the river. And I think the surrounding countryside is quite beautiful for explorations. The town itself is quite small.

Red Wing is one of the nicest small towns in MN. Kind of artsy, very pretty.

I grew up in that area. I am now living in Dallas, but had to peek in the MN forum.
My parents still live in Red Wing. They have great music fests in the summer, lots of things to do, very artsy. The city has become a bit commercialized since WalMart came into town, but downtown Red Wing has neat shops. It is woodsy, lots of bluffs and WATER everywhere. People are very friendly and most are very happy. It was one of the places they shot Grumpier old men at (the scene panoramic of the city). It also has lots of parks and historical places to visit. Lots of coffee shops. I really like this city. It has everything you need with a small town feel. I highly recommend visiting at the very least.

Right now we live in a small town called but we are only 15 mins away from a big city that has alot to offer. We are hoping that we can find a similar situation.

Red Wing isn't far from towns that have 'stuff'. It is only 40 minutes to Minneapolis/St. Paul. Hastings, Northfield, Rochester and the southern suburbs of the Twin Cities all have a lot to do.

Hastings would be your best bet then.
25 minutes to Red Wing
25 minutes to Mall of America and Airport
25 minutes to downtown St. Paul

I like the size of red wing and was just in winona, I believe its twin city? besides the fact the winona is a big college town, I hate the idea of college kids everywhere and u cant go out without being bombarded by them...I loved that is was amongst the bluffs, and river and lakes in the middle of town, so pretty. How does hastings compare to winona & red wing, I am a single mom of a 14 yr old daughter and looking to relocate and do property management and the thing I like better about red wing is that its within an hour to the cities or rochester and WI were I have friends and I like the 10-30,000 population towns, I dont need much for shopping, jcpenneys and walmart/kmart and a nice looking town and I am happy...But I keep hearing about alot of violent crimes in red wing, whats that all about? Can anyone explain???? I read yesterdays paper and seen the usual stuff like most towns have....Hastings dont look as pretty as red wing or winona, I need help, I just spent an expensive weekend looking at winona and cant keep going to all these towns, I need to narrow it down better....I aint a big city girl at all, always lived in small towns, but nothing for scenery here, but open corn fields, which is why I loved winona so much.If you had to pick between Winona, red Wing or Hastings, which would u choose???? If u like the water, scenery and bluffs????

You've mentioned this in 2 posts now. Where are you hearing about it?
Red Wing is comparable to any other city it's size crime-wise. Red Wing had a murder last year. Maybe that's what people are freaking out about. I don't see rampant violent crime here. I do see a section of the city that has your "undesirables" and they tend to stir up some action but usually it's amongst themselves. That also holds true for the reservation.
I've lived here for 8 years and I have 2 kids in school here and I'm not leaving. I like it here.
