'the "hill"'?
Never heard of it - and I lived in Northfield for over 30 years.

I was there a year, and when I was working on ways to work closer with the colleges an alumni laughed at me and said...they have everything they need. They never leave the "hill". That is what I was told...perhaps he was wrong.

For years I lived next door to an English professor at Carleton College. Never saw much of her husband, but she was very involved in the community, volunteering for school-related projects and so forth.
You may have heard of another Carleton professor who later became a United States Senator. While a professor he was also a wrestling coach at the Junior High/Middle School - and no professor coaches 6th-9th graders for any reason other than a love of it. His wife? She ran the media center at the high school (and was very popular).
I periodically volunteered at Greenvale Elementary (where my wife briefly taught) and I've volunteered with college professors who were also parents.
When I was a senior on high school I took a freshman psychology course at St. Olaf College - both colleges allow local high school students to take one course each semester. Students are awarded college credits as well as high school credits. The charge? There is none. That's a course costing dour figures - for free. And, yes, they still do it. Monthly open nights at the Carleton Observatory, use of the impressive libraries at both colleges open to the public, my wife used to use the swimming pool regularly at Carleton - yeah, open to the public). Actually, the degree to which the colleges integrate themselves with the local community is one of the major assets of Northfield.
So much for all those people hiding up on the "hill"!
The "hill"? That's hilarious! A comment by one alumni trumps a lifetime of experience to the contrary. Just the use of the phrase indicates someone entirely unfamiliar with Northfield.

I think when we were talking it was about getting the students to come into the communty, go to the theatre, etc.. It was not about staff or professors.
He worked with both colleges, (the students) and this is what he said.
He called it the hill... as I said I was only there a year. Alot of people gave me wrong infomration, so again, thanks for correcting me. I am not here to debate. Northfield has plenty of forums and ways to battle online. Not the place here. Just wanted people to know it was, IMHO it was NOT the best place I have lived, thats all and not the rosey picture everyone painted.

While I have very fond memories of growing up and living in Northfield, I must say when my parents just visited me, they told me about this heroin deal and all the problems that the wacky mayor/admin were causing. How sad. Back in high school there, pot and beer were our main drugs of choice, with a smattering of coke (rich kids) and hallucinogenics, usually brought in by college kids. Now I guess, heroin is back in a big way, and over a couple year period, 5 kids in Nfld. area have died. The town appeared to have been burying it's head in the sand, no thanks to the administration, and got a rude awakening.
All in all, though, it was a pretty good place to grow up. Lots of country to play in and rich educational resources. There were good teachers and great activities.
Too bad you were there at a bad time.

Might be moving to Northfield
Good Morning - My dh is applying for the deputy chief position in Norhtfield and was wondering if anyone can tell me a little about the town (shopping, family activities, housing and employment). We have a 15 year old daughter that likes the arts and music and a avid softball player. I come from a very small town in south dakota and like the idea of things to do all the time.
