Rochester commute to Austin?
My dh is interviewing in Austin in a few weeks. Is the southwest part of Rochester a good area? He would like a fairly easy commute b/t the two city/towns. Is this possible?
SW Rochester seems to be the most logical location...
thanks for any advice

it's about a 45 min commute from Rochester to Austin along I90. It's a fairly straight and easy stretch to drive, except in the winter when they close it down

I looked online for I-90 Mn road closures, and 1 site (an IOWA site!) stated that MN installed closure gates on I-90 back in the late '80's I believe; but I know for a fact that I-90 was subject to road closures as early as 1976 because DH missed a job interview due to a blizzard and road closures along I-90 and also MN Highway 14. Back then, the MN State Patrol didn't allow travel along the road (talk about an awful job back then: pulling people over and making them turn around and go back into towns)!
I am sure other posters can verify snow drifts taller than cars along I-90 during years with heavier snowfall than we have seen in the past few years.

I-90 gets closed, somewhere, every winter. I think this year around Albert Lea area it was closed 2-3 times. Over near the South Dakota line it closes pretty frequently with winter weather as well. It is just wide open and nothing to stop the blowing. The barriers have been up for many years. We lived in SD for a while and traveled on 90 many times. Most of the rural highways have barriers up now for road closures.
