It's a very strong siren sound along the border of South Minneapolis and Richfield near the Hub Center.

Testing the storm alert system. They mentioned on the news last night that it would be going off twice, once early afternoon and once early evening. They did it down here in Marshall too. We even got a recorded call on our phone giving us advance notice. Down here it was a test of the tornado warning system. It's Minnesota Severe Weather Awareness Week.

Alert sirens are in use in most areas, and not only for storm warnings. I live in a small town (population just under 3100) in northeastern Ohio, which conducts monthly tests of alert sirens for a nuclear power plant about ten miles from here. (Thank heaven there has never yet been an actual emergency situation there, that I am aware of anyway; I've been here 18 years). The possibility of accidents such as radiation leaks, etc. make it imperative that such sirens be used and tested on a regular basis. The sound you heard in your area may well have been just such a test, and nothing to be concerned about. If there is an actual problem, the sirens will be activated and you will be alerted over local radio and TV as to the best course of action.

Some cities still blow them once or twice every day. I live near Osseo which blows theirs every day at noon.

Aha! The old same-time-as-the-warning ploy.
