I understand that Canada isn't monolithic in any of the aspects below. If I had to guess it would probably not be like anything in Newfoundland or Nova Scotia, weather-wise, but you can talk about these aspects:

1) Weather
2) Landscape
3) Politics
4) Culture
5) Demographics

I understand, also, that the Minnesota political landscape is perhaps the one thing that has the greatest intersection with Canada of the above...

The two areas also share a great love of hockey.

It strongly depends on what part of the state you are talking about. To me Manitoba and Minnesota have quite similar landscape with a marked and distinct tree vs prairie line..... roughly from just east of Winnipeg to Steinbach then to west of Roseau-Fosston-Alexandria then to nr St Cloud then to about Austin. West of there much more prairie vs trees to the east.
The above line is approx based on my travels.

Certainly up here in far NW Minnesota in the Red River valley, Manitoba and Minnesota are linked quite well as is NW Ontario and areas along the Boundary Waters from Lake of the Woods eastward.

Also Manitoba and Minnesota have reciprocity in regards to college tuition.

At least in my area I feel no connection to southern Ontario...much more so to Winnipeg.

Considering Ontario sits on Minnesota's northern border and extends far, far north of it, the southern little finger of Ontario is "southeastern" to us, even if colloquially it's referred to as "southwest".

I'm not sure there's much of a comparison between Minnesota and Alberta. Alberta's heavily dominated by the oil industry and has a notably conservative political climate punctuated by the idea of self-sufficiency. Minnesota, on the other hand, has an economy consisting mostly of agribusiness, banking/finance, retail, and healthcare, with politics more on the progressive side of the spectrum.

Alberta is Prairie Province with a culture deeply rooted in ranching. Minnesota has a Nordic-influenced heritage that spawned cultural quirks like "Minnesota Nice", Janteloven, and an accent that's unique in North America. Albertans just have a "West Coast" accent like the rest of the people in Western Canada.

Geography/topography-wise, Alberta and Minnesota are completely different. Alberta has semi-arid areas and is home to the Canadian Rockies, producing chinook winds that are a defining characteristic of the climate. Minnesota is green and fertile with tens of thousands of lakes, and sits on a tri-point at the meeting of three of North America's major biomes (prairie, deciduous forest, boreal forest).

I really wouldn't call Minnesotans "churchy" by any measure, even in rural areas. Typically it's a faux pas to even discuss faith with people you don't even know or in mixed company. That being said, we have the entire Bible Belt to compare ourselves to.

To me Winnipeg feels like a mix between Duluth and Minneapolis.

Definitely not Toronto or any part of southern Ontario as what's miserably been mentioned above. Do you know how far southern Ontario is away from Minnesota? We're less than an hour from western New York. On the other hand, the prairies, northern Ontario and even rural BC share some culture with Minnesotans. Down to that funny "aboot" accent.

Most like Minnesota? Probably Ellesmere Island - which, coincidentally, is about the same size as Minnesota.

This is Grise Fiord, the largest metropolis on the island, in July (which is why it looks so unseasonably warm in the pic):

LOL. This is what it looks like when a reference goes right over someone's head.
