Virginia MN
I am thinking of buying some land and moving there in a few years.
Looks like a string of small cities on 169. I am assuming all the
stores one would need and all the outdoors very close buy?
My original plan was Alaska but MN looks like a better fit for
me and my family.
Any local opinions on that area would be great.
Looks hilly on the map?

Alaska is too damn cold. It's slightly hilly, and there's Giant's Ridge in Biwabik of course. Otherwise I like the area. Lotsa good stuff to do.

I found some land around Vir that looks very nice. Attaches to public land.
I think in the spring I will go take a peak. I am hoping my wife will fall in love
with the place.

The only reason anyone should ever move to Virginia, MN is for Giant's Ridge, best ski resort in the state (in my opinion). And, if you're moving somewhere for that reason, move to Colorado, much better skiing and not NEARLY as cold.
By the way, Alaska doesn't have anything on Minnesota in terms of cold, just too much/too less sunlight.

I don't know if this post is worse for its sweeping generalizations or for its presumptiousness. Virginia is a fine town. It is a Iron Range city which means that it is blue-collar liberal and blue-collar in its ways. It has great access to the outdoors and has a strong civic pride. It sure isn't for everybody, but is very different from how the above poster whould lead you to believe.

Access to out doors and low population density.
That is what I am after. I already live in Colorado and the outdoors
are packed with people. And I mean packed.
I have a list of properties we are going to look at
come spring thaw.
Virginia and all those small towns sound really nice and cozy.
Off course I will be living a short drive outside of them all.

There really isn't much there, civic pride is common almost anywhere you go, and almost all small towns are blue-collar.
But, the OP seems to be looking for nowheresville, Virginia would qualify, a lot of great outdoors around there.

Another sweeping generalization about small towns.

Do you think Virginia is nowheresville?
Heck they got a Kmart, Target and a mall some where around there.
I would assume a movieplex somewhere. Probably like 2 screens not 24.
Alaska dark in the winter means the temp does not fluxuate as much so it stays
colder longer. High and low temp for the day are usually only a couple degrees apart in the
dead dark winter.

Virgina is a nice small town, but bear in mind it is a small town. From what you claim to be looking for I think you will like it. It's beautiful scenery everywhere up there.
