Would you prefer my saying bigot? Prejudice? When you single out a group - it's a rose by any other name for god's sake - racism, prejudice, bigotry.

Default how much are groceries?

hello,

I am trying to move to St. Paul. Are any normal grocery stores around and how much are groceries comparitively to where I live?

Here, milk is about $2.69 and a loaf of bread is about $1.00. An apple is about $.49 per pound.

Thank you very much,

St. Paul mover

That is rather condescending, if you ask me. When I lived in Illinois, in the flatland of the flatlands, I oriented myself one way. Here in Colorado, I orient myself by the mountains. I knew a guy from Seattle who couldn't seem to orient himself via the mountains. It's in what you get used to. Plus, to a certain extent, it's just memorization of a familiar area.

Re: the cold. The OP said people told him it would be cold but he said that was OK, he liked snow. Then he found out just what "cold" meant. I see the same stuff on the Portand and Seattle forums, people saying "I like overcast and rain". Then they move there and go crazy. Sometimes you just have to find out for yourself.

Where do you live? It's more expensive there.

And as far as Somali's go, I have met many, and have found them to be very hard working, gentle, quiet, kind people, trying to make a life for themselves in a new country. And YOU think it is cold? I asked the security guard in my old building how he liked the cold in MN. He said the cold is fine, he would take cold over violence and fear and death. Good answer. Think about it, these people fled a country with nothing, came here, and get jobs. Not well paying jobs, but they work. Who is driving the cabs? Working security, parking ramp pay booths, pushing a mop and emptying garbage cans at the Mall of America, Xcel and Metrodome? The people who have lived here all there lives, know the language, have had every opportunity to make a life for themselves? No, they just get welfare, it is the Somalis(if we must lump a group) They live in neighborhoods they can afford. Do you expect them to live in Edina or Minnetonka? Compared to what they knew in Somalia, these trashy 'hoods are probably heaven to them. I worked for a phone company, in billing. Somali's, in general, paid their bills on time. They only had basic phone service, not cell phones, not cable, not internet, not even long distance, unlike most of the customers I dealt with, who had every imaginable service with their phone, and never paid on time. They lived within their means, probably saving to get family members here.

So really, what was the purpose of your post? Was it truly to warn people of the horrors of moving to Minnesota? I'm sure most are aware of the cold, and we are the land of 10000 lakes, not mountains. No, Minnesota is not California, and for that, I have always been thankful.
Some very good points here.

As far as the OP goes, I support (not necessarily agree with, but support) his right to express his opinions and if Minnesota isn't his cup of tea, then that's just the way it goes. But I can't help but wonder where he expects to find a place with a good job market, things to do, nice weather, mountains and NO immigrants/"trashy" neighborhoods?

There are going to be tradeoffs anywhere you go and you have to learn to take the good with the bad. I guess the key is to learn enough about yourself to figure out what is the most acceptable balance of pros and cons for you.

You would be surprised, on other forums, how people will say "I can cope with the (insert name of midwetern city/state) cold, because I live(d) in Buffalo, Boston, etc". People who haven't lived in the midwest have no idea how cold it gets there. They think it's winter wonderland. They have maybe experienced a few days of below zero weather, in their lives, and have no clue what it's like to live with that for days on end. And yes, people do tend to miss the familiar, like mountains, more perhaps than they thought they would.

There are the Sawtooth mountains along the north shore of Lake Superior. One of the best hiking trails in the world along the Superior Hiking Trail. World class mountain biking, sea kayaking. Good river kayaking and canoing. The BWCA. Great rock climbing and world class ice climbing. On and on and on without the ignorant Californians. I even saw a Somali (GASP!) on The trail the other day!
