Confused...
I am so confused rite now...at the LA forum, people are r ranting about the crime and cost of living!...and here ppl are sad about winters!...well, though I haven't personally been to LA or MN but I might be getting a chance to come to LA or Minneapolis for graduate study.
Truly speaking i've read quite a lot about LA n Minneapolis... and here is short summary of some positives & negetives about both places...(correct me if i'm wrong)
LA - positives:
good job opportunities, good universities(USC, UCLA..), awsome weather.
LA - negetives:
crime, overpriced house rents n high cost of living.
Minneapolis - positives:
again some good universities like U of Minnesota Twin Cities, lower cost of living n house rents etc., clean n beautiful(maybe only in summers; winters r supposed to be "gray n white" i guess)
Minneapolis - negetives:
reserved people, less dating, 6 Months of chilling winter!
Now my question here is, IF you have a job which is enough to pay for your expenses and a decent single bedroom apartment, AND u are/wanna be unmarried! ....then which place would you choose to live...honestly?

I've never lived in LA but I don't think I'd want to if the crime is as bad as they say it is. Not to mention the traffic (especially if you're going to live off campus.) But yeah, there's probably more to do there as a young/single person and the weather is certainly better.
There are good job opportunities in the Twin Cities though, and the work ethic is very strong in MN. If you're looking to settle down after you finish school it would be much more affordable to live in the "real" world in the Twin Cities than in LA. Unless you land a VERY good job, you'll probably never be able to afford to buy a house in LA (at least not in a neighborhood where you don't have to worry about getting shot.)
Yes, the people tend to be reserved in MN, but they're also more "real." Once you DO make friends here, they'll do anything for you. People are also much more polite here.
I guess if you're just looking for somewhere to be a student (and not necessarily living there forever) LA might be more appealing in some ways. To actually LIVE, though, I think I'd pick Minnesota. Just my opinion.

Thouht so
guess u r right.. MN looks more like a place to settle down.. and its always more comfortable to stay in a more safer n affordable place. Maybe as a student and through my initial job years, i'd like to stay in LA.. but try to move out eventually.. anyway, thanks a lot for all your responses.

I left L.A. for Minneapolis
I left L.A. for Minneapolis. I grew up in L.A. and could not WAIT to leave. It's over crowded, over priced...I guess if you like hot weather (HOT weather 8 months out of the year). I love Minneapolis' seasons, affordable housing, fewer traffic jams. I love that people here have fun even when it's freezing cold!! And people here are intelligent and have a strong moral and work ethic (unlike L.A. and I can say that because I'm from L.A.!!). (And by "moral" I don't mean judgmental...Minneapolis is VERY progressive.)
If you want to party, than L.A. may be your town. But Minneapolis is a fun city...and the quality of life you get for the money is amazing. The people are more genuine too...still working through the "reserved" part...but getting there.

La is very over crowded and the smog sucks. There is a lot to do, but a lot of mile to get there and a lot of traffic to dodge getting there.

Minneapolis for grad school and life in general.
Minnesota is consistently one of the healthiest states in the nation. And as I look around, I don't see many rotund people, smokers, or rotund smokers. When I go down to Alabama and Mississippi - whoally crap. The air is very clean here (relatively, I moved here from Virginia/DC a long time ago).
Minneapolis is also a very high-tech town - there are tons of business and firms on the leading edge of technology. I've had past clients who worked for Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and various biotech firms - too many to name.
For a techie such as yourself, I think you would find a lot of oppotunity up here.
My $0.02.

Well, you can have part of L.A. here because we do have smog but no smog alerts. Housing is getting more expensive but it's still less than in L.A., you can still find a decent 1 bedroom apartment in a safe neighborhood for around $600 if you don't need any extras like a pool or off street parking. Housing (rentals) tend to be more expensive in Mpls. than in St. Paul - I think it has something to do with the street numbering system in Mpls.
