I am hoping to get a surgical consult at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

Has anyone had colo-rectal surgery there and would like to comment on their surgeon?

If I have surgery there, we'll be living in the area for at least a few months.
Is the area around the Clinic fairly safe, or should I look for a particular neighborhood? We're looking at a condo or apartment.

Many of the rentals we've looked at say they're in walking distance using the subway (which I understand is an underground walkway), and you never have to go outside.
How does this work, does the apartment building have an underground entrance to the subway? Can I get to restaurants and shopping through the subway?

thanks for any info!

Rochester is known for having a low crime rate, but it is a little higher in some areas downtown. I'm sure someone else can shed some more light on this.

The subway connects all the Clinic buildings, a few of the hotels, and the Shops at University Square. Many other hotels and some apartments, as well as The Mayo Civic Center, the public library, and the government center are connected to these buildings via skyways. If you stay anywhere downtown, you will at worst be within a short walk of this system. There are several restaurants and shops within the subway/skyway system. You'll find most of the shops within the subway connecting the Clinic buildings to the Shops at University Square and within that center itself.

cool, thank you! I've never lived where it snows, so I'm worried about dealing with winter weather.

Don't worry about the snow. It almost never really impacts the city for more then half a day. We had a huge wet snow a couple weeks back and my kid had a doctors apt at mayo and the doc was there, and so were we. The place was hopping.

SW is mostly really nice if you are looking at areas. I wouldn't pay any extra to live on the subway...but then again parking is hard at Mayo at times. I always add an extra 20 minutes to park when we have an appointment at the Mayo main clinic. I just Valet there mostly (its not expensive, I think $8 is what I usually pay, and there is no tip). You are right at the door which is nice if someone is sick or recovering.

I have noticed some apartments have a shuttle to Mayo...that would be nice, I think.

The shopping in the subway is mostly tourist shopping. I mean, you can get most things there, but its more expensive. And much of the stores are for tourists or for the doctors. Restaurants are plenty from the subway though. I hate the subway. Its long tunnels, I get lost, it doesn't feel quicker. My husband likes it though. Also, it everything in it, even sections of it are very limited to M-F business hours. Then you have to go outside or go somewhere else. Will you have a car?

Really, we moved there a few years ago and I worried too much about snow, crime, getting around. It isn't that hard, even with a disabled family member. I think the one thing I couldn't live without is covered parking. I do not want to scrape ice or snow in the early morning!!! And crime isn't bad at all.

Also if you will be there in the winter...it does pay to spend a little more on getting what you want in a home because we do spend much more time inside in the winter. And I would guess if you are recovering, you would too (some people love being out in the winter). Its worth it to have a nice place to live so you don't get too much cabin fever. Big windows are nice...the help warm up the home by letting the sunlight in.

P.S. The closer you live to a major road, the sooner and better your roads will be maintained in a snow. It only snows once in a while. It isn't all the time. The cold is the hardest part. A winter coat, hat, scarf, snow boots, socks, gloves and maybe an underlayer if you get really cold and you will be fine for normal in and out life. If you will be outside in the snow, you will want warmer pants.

Also, in a month it will be warming up. Sometimes there is a cold snap after that, but they are shorter. Then it is "mud season" but Spring comes in May.

Whoohoo! Balmy* March will arrive soon enough, and it will be time to start breaking out those shorts and t-shirts.

* Balmy defined as anything above 50 F.

It's not the heat, it's the humidity.

If the humidity isn't bad, 75F is ok. But I agree with you, overall.

Minnesotans LOVE to complain about the weather. I fit right in.
