Question Domestic Violence Shelters/ Women's Organizations??

I have a degree in Women's Studies that I recieved in Portland,OR, where the feminist movement is alive and well, and mostly accepted and supported. I now live in Maui, where the violence rate is extremely high, unfortunatly the serverity of Domestic Violence is not taken very seriously. I work at the only Shelter on the island, and we are full. My question is this: Is "feminist" a "F" word in the Twin Cities, and are there many Domestic Violence Shelters. I am considering moving.... THANKS!!

MNNative will become famous soon enough
There are shelters, at least I've heard that there are, I think there's something here in Burnsville and I think there is some place called...Cornerstone?...but I wouldn't have a clue where any of them would be. So sorry for not being extremely helpful. But at least you know there are places here!

I think, and maybe I'm wrong but I kind of doubt it, that domestic violence is very much frowned upon and that there is probably enough of a need for help that the shelters serve a purpose. I think maybe the twin cities is liberal enough to embrace a "feminist".

My best guess for employment would be at a shelter, the United Way and "non-profits" of the sort, even schools are hiring "Community Action Council" staff to work with families in the community (not just on domestic violence issues).

Again, hope that helps, I know I'm kind of vague. Maybe try a general search for domestic violence shelters, mn for starters and see what happens. Good luck!

There are a number of women's advocacy organization, domestic abuse/ battered women's shelters here in Minneapolis and I don't think feminism is an "f" word. If you're looking for jobs, definitely use MCN : Nonprofit Job Postings - it's where pretty much where all non-profits post position openings, and it will give you an idea of the market in your field and/or potential organizations to work for. Feel free to direct message me if you have any more questions. Good luck-

I didn't check the link the previous poster posted, but I used to live in Eagan and Citizens Action Council has a home for battered women called the Lewis house. They also have many other community programs. Many hospitals have domestic abuse progams like womankind, etc. There a good organization called "Whisper" (I think) that gets women out of prostitution as well.

Hope that gives you some ideas.

I work in the field - and the Twin Cities has many family violence programs and shelters - some are even culturally specific. Infact many huge movements in the DV field happened in Minnesota (1st shelter and the Duluth Model in the legal system). Here are some resources: Latest News from MCBW | Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women. Day One (A program linking MN shelters - to insure a safe and more timely placement for a victim - she/he never needs to call back becuase all of the shelters are linked on-line and by phone) Day One. MINCAVA Electronic Clearinghouse. Some of the programs to look at are: Tubman Family Alliance, Cornerstone, Women's Advocates (the 1st shelter in the US), Sojourner, Asian Women United, Eagle's Nest, Casa de Esperanza, Lewis House, Alexandria House. There are also many ways to become involved in the legal advocacy part of the community - many of the programs provide legal advocacy in court or are part of taskforces working with police, county prosecuters and DV programs. OUr community in the East Metro (Washington County) also uses the Restorative Justice model. Good luck!
