Drove past the most famous pie place, and the lot was completely full, clear out to the road entrance.
Betty's Pies is doing well, on the way up the Hwy 61.

Never understood why? I remember eating there long before the remodel. Rustic inn is worth eating at. Kinda funny that the people I know in Silver Bay, none of them will eat at Betty’s.

I don't know how their pies were when they first gained their reputation but we ate there a few years ago and were disappointed after all the hype.

It's a pleasant visual experience and the service was okay but there was nothing memorable about the piece of pie I had. Maybe you have to give them more than one try? Or maybe they're resting on their laurels?

Been a there. Pies are fine/good. Don't know why all the hype though. Wouldn't wait an hour for one.

It's certainly a lot of good marketing. I know the 2 locations they launched in the metro area both failed. I think people crave a comfort food sweet when on vacation, and given their location they are getting a lot of vacationers. Agreed that Rustic Inn is WAYYYYY better

They tried two locations here? I know Grandma’s tried two in Plymouth, and 7 corners near U and failed. Is that what you thought? We used to eat at the canal park one, but not so much anymore. Both work great with marketing and location, a very popular marathon named after it helps. The secret gem is Lemon Wolf in Beaver Bay, best open faced sandwich I’ve ever had and it wasn’t the original chef making it (he passed away, so he passed on his way of making food to his wife)

You hit the nail on the head! Rustic Inn Café has way better food and pies. I lived in Silver Bay for eight years and your're right, the Rustic is the place the locals go to. Only one time did I eat at Betty's and I found out for myself that Betty's is only mediocre.

When I lived on the shore Rustic Inn was always doing very well, with good service to go with their good food. All you have to do is drive another few miles to get to the Rustic.

Rustic Inn Cafe - Castle Danger, Minnesota

I'm glad I found this thread; I like to do my part to tell people about the Rustic Inn Café.

Ahh yes, Lemon Wolf is another place we ate at a lot and you're right, it is delicious.

If you find yourself in Beaver Bay the Agate shop there is also a gem. Such a nice place with good, reasonable prices. The owners are very knowledgeable about geology and it's a pleasure to shop there or just look around in the little museum part of the shop.
