A good test: Say this, if it sounds weird, you're Minnesotan.

I think its getting better as there are less and less direct decedents of Scandanavia, and as the area urbanizes.
Accent (linguistics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
Quote:
In linguistics, an accent is a manner of pronunciation of a language. Accents can be confused with dialects which are varieties of language differing in vocabulary and syntax as well as pronunciation. Dialects are usually spoken by a group united by geography or social status.
Some people are giving examples of dialect and others accents

Sorry mate, but you are wrong there. An accent is the way words are pronounced. A dialect is the way you speak a language in your region including accent, grammar and vocabulary. "Mardy" from my name 'mardybum' is a word from northern English dialect, for example. I'd say Minnesotans definatley have an accent.

The accent is stronger in the Outstate. But I don't know why people from the TC area don't think they have the MN accent. Half of the people in the cities are from small town MN.

Im from the TC area, and, as I do understand I obviously have a North Midwest accent, its not as bad as outstate MN.

I was in Walker, MN once, and I met some girls from Grand Rapids, and all my friends from the cities could not get over the way they talked...it was Really really obvious, almost as bad as Fargo, the movie.

So i think if youre from TC and can blatantly notice it from outstate people, that shows something...it gets worse as you go north, especially towards iron range and grand forks.

But, again, when i was at relatives in CALI and PHILLY, they all picked me out right away.

Do Minnesotans have an accent? Does the the word bag rhyme with vague? If you answered "yes" then you have an accent.
