Well, that's an educated interpretation of Govie's statements, which were a little more far-reaching in their implications. And I would probably agree with your interpretation as well...

I just strongly disagree with the business of stereotyping any group of people based on their accents, Minnesotans included (the movie Fargo, anyone?) and I don't agree with identifying some accents as "acceptable" and others "unacceptable."

YESSS!!! I never really noticed it until people not from MN would comment on it. And I currently live in OR unfortunately, and everyone I know comments on my accent...We pretty much elongate the O's, and add an A to the end of every word. We also add 'ah' alot, such as, 'how bowt we go to ah...the bar behind the church?' etc. I like my accent, adds culture. lol

Heh heh, the standard 19th century Norwegian accent when speaking English, as draped over Minnesota -- all my MN and ND ancestors on my Norske side talk that way, and we're proud of it too!!

I ran into a guy from Minnesooota the other day, and we had fun trying to out-accent each ooother, ja.

Uff da!!

Oh, this thread is a hoot! I love it! Can't sleep, so I thought I would read threads from the way-too-many places I have lived in the U.S. What an education. Everyone is so bitter, so angry, except in Minnesota! I might have known . . . .

So anyway, in 1969, I told a Minnesota man I would marry him if he would help me get rid of my accent, which was a horrible conglomeration of all the places I had lived. Really ugly. SERIOUSLY ugly! We laughed, but I really hoped he would do it. He did. And I ended up with the most beautiful Minnesota accent anyone could hope for! I lived there from 1968 through the first half of 1983, so it became very natural.

After I was widowed, over 6 years later, I moved the children back to where I was born. Over three years after that, I remarried (Minnesota men are hard to beat!) and moved north. Even then, people would ask where I was from, but they already knew -- Minnesota. People really like Minnesota accents!

But now, I've lost mine. Totally gone -- back to the nondescript west coast voice of my youth.

However, if I get around anyone from Minnesota, I fall back into it! If I even say "Minnesota," for the next 5 minutes, I am back into it! And I love it!

You Minnesota people! You lucky ducks! You are a beautiful lot!

I posted my accent (what I thought was a non-accent) on a similar thread on the General U.S. forum. People instantly knew I was from Minnesota.
