Its more of a south dakota, north dakota, minnesota, alberta accent. Can't verify that with montana, which i'd assume to be similar to wyoming and colorado accents.
I can hear remnants of the accent from some people.

And I think it's more rural than urban. You really hear it in the Cities. But yeah, since someone brought up the movie "Fargo," I have to relate one anecdote. A co-worker, who lives in rural Lake Park, MN, said that when he saw the movie, he didn't understand what the fuss about the accent was all about. A number of us laughed and said, "that's because you sound just like the movie!"

I can't remember where, but I read/heard that most linguists/speech therapists agree that the northern accent is the most easily understandable accent of all the different speech patterns across the nation. Probably because we don't use a lot of slang in our vocabulary.

Certainly we have an accent. I moved to Utah in August of 2006 and my accent was barely noticeable, except for a few words (mostly aboat, boat, and snow). I've been on vacation in Northern MN for a week and a half now and my accent is back 100%. I talked to a Utah friend of mine over the phone the other day and she could barely understand me! I love it and hate that I lose it.

I've lived in several major US cities and eventually I get pegged..."oh, from Minnesota". It's the inbreeding.

I hear ya on Fargo, my gf grew up in rural MN and Fargo and she has a really strong accent, which sometimes I wonder if she's from another country, say Germany.
