I grew up in Elk River and attended Elk River Senior High. After some moving around to different parts of the Twin Cities, I now reside about 10 miles North of Elk River and drive through it every day. Because I graduated about 20 years ago, I can't speak for the current environment of Elk River High School, but i can tell you that the community itself still has a small town feeling and is very nice. I know the school has had strong sports programs throughout the years and much has been invested in building new schools. The high school is in the same building from when I graduated, but I know they made significant renovactions to it over the years.
The City of Elk River is located right on the Mississippi River. There is an older downtown area, but most of the new business, resturants and retail shops have moved North East of town. There is a Walmart, Target, Home Depot and dozens of smaller shops and restaurants. Elk River is approximately 40 miles away from Downtown Minneapolis. The surronding areas, though ever expanding, are still rural in feel. There is no notable crime in the area and general upkeep of houses is good. There are plenty of new residential neighborhoods in the area and now is the time to buy. I believe light rail transportation will be built through Elk River to the Twin Cities, in the next 10 years.
The only real downfall is the traffic. Elk River is on the crossroads of two fairly significant highways, so driving especially on Friday nights when folks are headed out of town can be a pain.
