Rochester is also training a group called the Guardian Angels to help keep things under control and has a community service group with the police that are always out and about.

If you're considering a move to Rochester, I hope fears of gangs or crime don't influence your decision.

The Rochester metro area is the 22nd safest in the country (City Crime Rankings by Population Group).

The city of Rochester is 54th safest in the country (Morgan Quitno's 7th Annual Safest City Award in Safest Rank Order). No other MN city city appears safer on the list. Bloomington is 66th, Duluth is 117th, St. Paul is 224th and Minneapolis is 298th out of the 322 cities on the list.

According to the Rochester city web site, it is consistently named as one of the nation’s top cities to live...

2003: Rochester was ranked #37 on Men’s Journal’s list of “The 50 Best (Healthiest, Safest, Sexiest) Places to Live.”

2000: Rochester was voted “Best Small City in America” by Money magazine

1993-97: Rochester placed in the top three rankings in Money magazines “Best Places to Live” five times.

I live a couple towns away from Rochester. There are a few gangs that I know of like some bloods and crips, MS13, and a few other gangs but there isnt that many and they are not that active. Rochester isnt that bad but I dont think I would move there. I would recomend you move to somwehere like Kasson about 20min. away. It is worth it especially if you have kids I think but that is my opinion.

I moved to Rochester 17 years ago and heard *a lot* about the Rochester gang activity. Honestly, it scared me to death! In these 17 years I've lived here, I've heard about Rochester gangs here and there but, for the most part, it hasn't touched our family. I have a middle-school student who did meet one kid in her school who was a known gang member, but the kids just stay away from them and it's not a problem.

So, to answer the question, Yes - I've heard that we have gangs here; however, in 17 years, I've never once felt unsafe in Rochester. Certainly there are probably areas of town I've never been to and that might intimidate me, but I've never had a need to be in those areas that might be rougher.

I went to school in Rochester and was a member of the CRIPS while I lived there and my younger brother is FOLKS but come on people you act as if it is the end of the world if you live where gangs are. Open your eyes work with your kids don't give them a reason to fall victim to the streets. I left that lifestyle a long time ago due to the fact that I seen reality and prison in two different states now I go to school and major in Criminal Justice. So gang members can change

If you want some good information on crime in Rochester, check out kttc.com, there's a video on crime and shootings. It's under "Protected by Angels." It has the Guardian Angels, crime task force, etc. It's short but addresses many issues.

I'm considering relocating to a small town close to Rochester. Can anyone give me info on which small town would be appropriate for a single parent family with elementary and middle school aged kids (safe environment, good schools, etc). Thanks

Well depending on how far from Rochester you are thinking, I'd recommend Stewartville or Byron. Both are in the 5000 population area, very nice looking small towns, good schools - rank very high - and close to Rochester - both about 5-8 miles away. You could also look at Pine Island (15 miles away). There are others that are nice, some pretty small, others not as small. It really depends on distance and what you are looking for.
