ladycontractor is on a distinguished road
ahh...am a lady builder here...in Minneapolis...make sure you have good windows..lowE glass, with argon gas..and thermo panes..stay away from old storm windows...etc...good insullation in your attic..protects from ice dams...and good air movement...Minnesota roofs need proper roof vents to insure against ice build up...I have hot water (natural gas fuel) heating and still feel it is by far the best type of heating system out there...no loud noise, no dry cold moving air blasts and longer heating ratio...hydroponic heating is more economical because the pipes run through your flooring structure...

Before you move here.......take a trip to Duluth for a couple weeks. Then ask yourself honestly if you could live there. It's pretty country, the people are nice. It's pretty much cold year round and you have a beautiful lake that's too cold to swim in. It has good points but it's not for everyone, maybe even not for most. Find out before you relocate your family.

Regarding winterizing your home; get a roof shovel at Menards (If there are icicles on your roof, water can get under shingles and rot), Keep your home in general good repair. Don't be put off by old homes, IMHO theyre better than the new ones. If insulation is a concern you can retrofit walls with insulation without a big mess (use the new expandable stuff you install with a hose). And if you haheat your have the cash, insulate and heat your garage, you and your car will be happier.
