Default suburbs near Golden Valley

Considering a job in Golden Valley and am looking for a nearby suburb with a "downtown mainstreet" that's walkable, perhaps w/townhomes/lofts nearby. Areas like Stillwater and Hastings come to mind as well as some of the urban areas--linden hills, etc. but I'm looking for something just west of Minneapolis; schools are less important as we're done with that. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I would suggest Robbinsdale, Hopkins, possibly St. Louis Park if going the suburb route, and there are some great areas on the western edges of Minneapolis throughout the Grand Rounds system, although don't know if any would technically have a "downtown" area.

How far west? Is Chaska too far? Chaska is similar to Hastings/Stillwater.

Wayzata would be an option, schools are very good there so resale is going to be good--that is a plus.

Saint Louis Park's "downtown" beats the pants off all the western suburbs, plus you're a very short bike ride down to the lakes.
