New Ulm is historic, charming and fun!
New Ulm, Minnesota, has an interesting downtown. There are many artists and forward-thinkers that have located to this town becuase of its beauty and offer of a simpler life beyond the hectic pace of the Twin Cities and other metropolitan areas. Because of this, in addition to New Ulm's rich history and its charm, there are alway new things to see and do and a developing economy. The best place to start your adventure is in Downtown New Ulm. One of the first cities to offer interactive Ipod walking tours, you can borrow an Ipod at the Chamber of Commerce right on Minnesota Street and take a very interesting tour...it's fun with neat facts about historical elements including "surviving Prohibition" in a town known for its breweries. Some of the downtown's most interesting shops and places to frequent include Lambrecht's (women's boutique clothing & decor), Country Loft (gifts & collectibles), antique shops, Larkspur (yum!), the Kaiserhoff (order the Lewie Benson Special), and more...Visit any time, but it is especially fun to come during one of their many festivals. For those who love to shop, visit the first two weekends in November for the Shopping Opener (He Hunts, I Shop) - which will feature fun events like a cocktail cruise, license to laugh, an art walk, and of course - shopping! New Ulm is well known for the August Schell Brewery & Gardens; also make sure to take a short trip outside of town to Morgan Creek Vineyards for locally produced, award-winning wines. There's always something happening in New Ulm!

going downhill
Although Red Wing has a cute and historical downtown, the city sure has been hit with a lot of violent crime lately. I personally don't like to walk around a place I don't feel safe in. Make sure you lock up your belongings and check to make sure you don't turn down the wrong street.

Red Wing not that safe anymore
I know what you mean about "can't believe RW isn't a safe town". I have been researching it for a year which included eight visits. I was trying to convince my husband that it was theplace for us to retire. Well, all I can say is thank goodness we did not go there. We even had an offer on a house at one point but that fell thru (thank goodness for that too). I am not here to bash Red Wing just to let folks know that things aren't always what the seem. Yes, on the surface it is cute. Start reading the local newspaper and keep track of Red Wing citizen comments. There is a lot of hate and discontent there, that you will notice. Best wishes.

What is that huge hole in the ground in downtown St Cloud? knke0402, do you know what's going on there? It looks like another building by the new library.

Ciatis is up and running. I guess there were some menu changes that are not going over very well. The interior is very nice.

The old law enforcement center isn't that old. I wonder if that building will be assimilated by the courthouse.
Interesting...
