Mankato State has had some fairly decent programs over the years. Back in the 80's, their CompSci program was excellent, for example, and a BSCS from Mankato actually carried some weight.

I agree with you golfgal. That "Ivy League of the....." saying is used by schools all over the nation.

Uughh...the OP asked about the school's reputation...when I made this statement, I was referring to what I have heard a few people that were not in any way affiliated with the school (they weren't ever faculty, staff, or students of the school) say to me about Morris when I told them I went there; furthermore, I prefaced it as being a "strange categorization" (which is ultimately why it stuck out in my mind) and I similarly admitted that it was probably a stretch in a reply to golfgal. Geez, by the amount of responses that statement garnered, you would think I was telling people that Rosemount was only 20 minutes away from downtown Minneapolis or some other stretch of that magnitude .

Minnesota Morris has made the news several times for downscaling their athletics and raising their academic requirements for entrance.
Maybe people who went elsewhere and bash Morris got rejected when they applied at Morris and thus are still bitter

Man I would LOVE to live in Morris to go to school. You will NEVER find a better area. It appears to me to be in close proximity to Alexandria (the large city) Ha Ha, not real big, but one that has all the major stores for shoping needs that we don't get in smaller towns. Morris is big small, 5000 or so in population and with the School there's a ever changing demographics. I think you'll be supprised at how nice it is there.

Political Standing
As someone who has previously worked for the University of Minnesota system in Admissions, here are my thoughts on UMM for the OP:
I don't know where in the South you're from, so I don't mean to make assumptions... but, the student and faculty body at Morris is very liberal. Although dialogue is encouraged, conservative political ideas are not generally well received. If you consider yourself a true Red-Stater, it might be best to keep on looking.
However, if you are stuck in a Red State, but have a Blue State of mind, Morris might just be a great fit for you. I believe they went "off the grid" this year with their wind turbine and biomass facility- UMM is nationally regarded for their progressive action in terms of environmental conservation & protection. There's a large & active vegan population and the campus makes great efforts to support the local economy by purchasing locally raised produce and dairy for their food service. The student body is very active in politics and a recent graduate was the Independence Party endorsed senatorial candidate in 2006.
In terms of weather- MN is cold. Morris is cold. But cold is a very temporary sensation. I would not recommend basing your college decision on weather. Who knows? You might just enjoy experiencing some of the great winter sports that are alive and well in the Midwest.
Good luck!

Twin Cities.................................Duluth..... .....Morris..Crookston..............Rochester
if you got a 2.5 or better gpa your an auto admit essentially at any of the 4 campuses. Twin Cities is the only real legit one.
