Sam Cook just had a pretty decent editorial in the Duluth News/Tribune summarizing why there are those among us who may enjoy being out in the woods in the winter.

International Falls did register an even -40F air temperature this morning! That is the coldest so far this season for MN.

reeneeisexena----------check out Flagstaff Arizona. I have daily monitored the summer temps there and day after day after day--the highs are 80-82 and the lows 48-52.
The winters are much milder than Minnesota's, but I scratched it from my retirement list cuz it gets too much snow.
(probably the same reason you wouldn't consider it)
If the snowfall wasn't so much, I would be considering it.

Yes, -40 is a point where F and C meet.

Check out the winter weather at Resolute Bay.
(When I worked at NWA, that was one of the two places we always looked at in the middle of winter to find cold temperatures. The other place was the cheerfully-named Deadhorse airstrip near Barrow, Alaska.)

What part of the south do you live babit612? I think if you live in MN, you have to enjoy the outdoors year around, if you sit inside during the winter, then maybe Minnesota isn't
the place to be, and the southwest is looking awfully good to me. laplander

I am from Michigan and my wife is from Minnesota. Me and my wife spent the last 8 years in Michigan, and we just recently moved back to Minnesota. Her family never understood why we choose Michigan over Minnesota. I tell them the winters are warmer and they say, "both states are in the North, how would winter be any differant?" So here it is. There is Michigan cold, then there's Minnesota cold. The average high temp in Michigan where I lived was 28 dagrees. Here in Minnesota, 5 dagrees. There are parts of Minnesota colder than parts of Alaska! Anchorage's average high in winter is 22 dagrees. So yes, Minnesota is COLD, with hot summers. And to the person who said it makes Minnesota special, no, it makes Minnesota cold and miserable. But, summers are nice here, and that's special. P.S. Go TIGERS!!!
