Saturday ,early evening, it was -3 in MPLS. A reporter from KSTP was out to see if it stopped people from enjoying outdoor activities. They were at Buck Hill Ski and there were very few people out and chair lift after chair lift was going empty.
The VERY FEW skiers who were there were well bundled up and stated it was niice because the usual crowd were not out in the cold.

The purpose of my post is to contradict the posters who proclaim they are out snowmobiling, skiing, hiking , and cold weather makes no difference.

I always take statements like that with a "grain of salt" because weather below zero DOES have a huge affect on how many people are participating in outdoor activities.
True, but how many days a year are below zero here in the metro? Not that many. Any temp above zero and there are lots of people out doing all those things.

My truck did read -20 on the way to my meeting at 7:30 this morning. brrr.

I walk my dog 2-3X a day in below zero weather; this morning it was 14 below in St. Paul. This happens about only 5-7 days during the winter. What you do is dress for it. Heavy coat with layers underneath; double pants, good socks, hood and great scarf and gloves.

I am a homebody basically so I don't mind and I was telling myself that with all this, I prefer it to the hot humidity of summer. Get a good fire going, nice warm, cozy house, good down comforter, good winter food and pretend you are in a log cabin that is warm as in the olden days.

I keep an eye on the temps in Dawson, Yukon during the winter. Because it's in a valley, cold gets trapped inside and it's not unusual to have an entire week where the temperature doesn't rise above -40. And this place has 1000 residents! How do people live through that? If it were windy, the feel-like could easily fall to -60 or even lower.

My friend my San Diego recently came to visit me here in Southern Ontario during as cold snap. He describes cold as 40F, so 0 was a revelation for him. But he did make a good point: many places in warmer climes have no central heating, so it's often colder inside homes that it is in the north. His biggest complaint was going from inside to outside and adjusting to the temperature.

I didnt think it was possible to get this cold anywhere in the USA. Right now in Minneapolis (january 30, at 1:30 PM) it is -20 degrees in Minneapolis and the wind chill is at -40...WOW. Currently where I live near Cleveland its 46 degrees (above) outside but its supposed to get colder soon. But when I heard how bad Minnesota is I couldnt believe it, I guess this happens a lot there.

I don't know about a lot but we usually have a couple days like this a winter. We deal with it--a lot of the rural schools have a 2 hour late start so kids aren't standing at bus stops in the worst of it, which is usually right before sunrise. You add an extra layer, make sure you have gloves, etc. We went to the high school girls basketball game last night and it was pretty cold but you just hustled in and out of the the buildings.

I believe your post contradicts the very point you are trying to make. Did the ski area shut down? No. Were people still out skiing? Yes! In fact, braving the cold brought a fringe benefit: NO CROWDS. Not everyone may go out in sub zero temps for recreation, but the fact remains that a lot of people DO! It's all in the way you want to view it. For some of us the cold weather really doesn't make much of a difference!

According to National and Local Weather Forecast, Radar, Map and Report right now in my hometown of International Falls it is -12 with the wind at -32. It was a bit colder this morning when I checked, -48 with the wind if I remember correctly.

Makes me very glad to be living out west, though I have to laugh when the locals are complaining when it is 20 degrees. Weenies!
