I have found in general that you have a mix of people in Rochester - friendly, arrogant, helpful, rude. It all depends. But you will definitely find some very friendly people here. There are parts of town in all 4 areas - SW, NW, SE, NE that aren't good and areas that are very nice. The farther you move away from downtown the better. There are also nice smaller towns around - i.e., Byron, Stewartville, Pine Island. If you work for Mayo Clinic, a lot of these smaller towns have shuttles to the Clinic. I have heard good things about the school districts in the smaller towns too. I don't know what pay scales are here for Walmart but I believe most jobs here pay more than minimum wage. But that is just what I have heard, not from personal experience.
If you are specifically wondering about renting versus buying, it might be easier to be more specific or more helpful.

If you can handle the cold weather, you will be fine. I made the opposite move from Rochester to Jacksonville so I know what you are talking about when you say the pay scales in Jacksonville are not very good. They are terrible!! You can make more money in Rochester and the cost of living is so much lower.
In general, people are more friendly in Rochester. You will actually find strangers that smile and say hi! It's ok. You will get used to it after a little while.
Good luck!

Oh I forgot one more thing. I understand your concern about being safe after living in Jacksonville. One of the best things about leaving Jax is you won't hear about the latest murder every night on the evening news.
I would live in any neighborhood in Rochester after living in Jax. As you know, Jacksonville Mayo (San Pablo area) is one of the safest areas in Jax. 99% of all neighborhoods in Rochester are safer than that.

Hi,
I moved to Rochester in 1991 and have found it to be pretty nice, overall. We need more diversity in this town. It is still pretty "small town" despite having over 100,000 residents. Not sure why someone would want to move to MN from FLA (the weather here is extremely cold with lots of snow this year), but each person has their own reasons.
Regarding the salaries, it depends on what you do and where you work. I'd be happy to try and help out with some information based on my experience. Do you work in the health care field? Do you have a specific license? I work at a small hospital and there are some openings there for nurses and possibly other jobs. Also, Mayo is usually hiring in some capacity. Right now, with the unemployment rate being around 7%, jobs are scarce all over.
Take care.

I my opinion, Rochester is one of the finest cities in the US. The education, culture, arts, shopping, and, of course, healthcare are all world class. There are also indoor and outdoor swimming pools. Plenty of health clubs. An international airport. You name it! It is an Oasis city in the midwest.
Good luck with your relocation. Good choice!
