Are you a stay-at-home dad?
Howdy all,
I am a former stay-at-home dad, I just began working full time a month ago. For three and a half years I stayed at home full time with my young children and had a blast being an important and integral part of their lives. The purpose of my post is to let stay-at-home dads know about a great group of guys in the Twin Cities. MDAH is Minnesota Dad's at Home, they have a chat board on Yahoo, regular events such as playgroups, dad's night out and just fun guy time. Their website is mdah.org I am no longer a part of the group since I'm working but wanted to let you know about this wonderful group of guys.
I had no clue how much work it was to stay at home with the kids. The first few weeks were lots of fun, but then the newness wore off and dirty diapers, cleaning the house, laundry, dishes really set in. My wife helped as much as she could but with working 40+ hours per week, it was tough for her. I never gave her the help and encouragement she needed when I was working full time. Boy did I realize what I jerk I had been...and unintentionally.
And now that we're both working full time it's a new thing for our family since one of us has always been home for the nine years of our marriage. Guys, try and remember to give the mother of your children a break. Don't offer to babysit your kids (I've heard this phrase from way too many guys), be a dad and husband and let her have the weekend to herself. And surprise her by having the house cleaned impeccably or something done that she knows you absolutely hate to do. One of the main reasons I became a stay-at-home dad was because my father's work was always more important them me or my siblings. And when he was home, he really wasn't there emotionally. And I can understand having a draining day and not wanting kids climbing all over you...but I guarantee you there will be a day you wish you could have that all back! My kids are only 4 and 7 so I am thankful for each and every day.
Check out the mdah.org group. They're a great bunch of guys! Blessings!
