Thanks for the links, guys. The most important thing that I'd want as far as snow goes is to have a good chance of getting a white Christmas. It just makes the holiday SO much prettier. Oh, and who doesn't love whopper snowstorms. You know the kind, the ones that the weathermen are saying for about a week (and it actually turns out to be true, lol) "We have the potential for a huge snowstorm coming this way, we're talking two feet or more". When I hear that kind of stuff on the weather, I suddenly go from being 36 years old to about 9 years old, and it just brightens up my week.

Yep tis the season... not too terribly unusual out that way the high plains of Wyoming....eastern Montana and the western Dakotas typically have their first storm middle part of October. Their higher elevation allows them to get the earlier season snows when cold air just isnt quite deep enough to affect "lower" elevations like the eastern Dakotas and Minnesota.
By the way....most outlooks I have seen (at least non government) point toward a winter rather similar overall to last year. At least the main players in the atmosphere are pretty similar in setup to last season.

TransientTranny-------you mentioned someday owning a huge organic farm with cattle, chickens and produce.
Imagine how much "fun " you'll have and how " young" those huge storms will make you feel as you plow all that snow to get feed to your cattle and chickens. (SARC)
"BEEN THERE, DONE THAT"-------(all my life)
(and I can assure you it was not "fun" nor did it make me feel "young" again )
Perhaps that is the difference between "fantasy farming" and "reality farming"

marmac, Me thinks I have difficulty distinguishing between dream and reality. Little wonder that I dream so vividly.
You're right, I don't really want a huge organic farm with cattle and chickens. I think just having a farm large enough that we can have cattle, chickens, goats, some forest, PRIVACY (where we can't see our neighbors looking out their windows or standing on their porch or deck), a large garden. And, be able to give people hayrides and let them walk through a cornfield maze, and to pick pumpkins. Oh, and a large pond!
Forgot the McMansion, too. No, seriously, we'd just want a 2-story OLD farmhouse that needs some TLC.

If you're looking for snow in Minnesota, Duluth or near the Canadian border is your best bet. Seriously, have you ever lived in an area that has a lot of snow? It's not as ideal as you'd think...it involves a lot of difficult driving and often includes below zero temperatures that make it difficult to enjoy the snow. If you're looking for skiing, Giant's Ridge in Biwabik is a great location.

Last year's Mora Vasaloppet it was -16F at the start with howling winds. We still had a good time.
There's no such things as bad weather, only bad gear.

I have lived in Minnesota all my life as well. We now live in St. Paul, however during most of the years we were raising our kids, we lived in the Detroit Lakes area. We bought a "hobby farm" of 180 acres south of Audubon, MN (on highway 10 between Detroit Lakes and Fargo) and farmed it organically. We raised beef cattle, pigs, chickens, goats, etc. etc. and planted a huge garden and orchard. There was never a winter that we weren't snowed in for several days. We still have family in that area and visit often. I can't think of a winter that did not have lots of snow even when the Twin Cities are snowless.
