We bought our land from Mark at Border Lakes Realty, Ely, Minnesota. He showed us property that was listed with Bear Island Land Company. My husband and I bought land in 2001 and relocated up north in 2003, built our dream home in 2006-2008, and rent out a guest suite over the garage to help pay down our mortgage. We both work in Virginia but don't mind the commute to Ely. A Jeep or 4x4 is a good investment. A wind farm is going up (proposed) near Aurora, where Polymet Mining construction project on hold because of environmental stuff...Iron Range Resources website could give you an update on economic development plans. There is also a proposed project at the Soudan mine. I am optimistic about these projects. Really think about energy sources if building. There's a monopoly and even the Energy Wise programs (dual fuel and off peak electric rates) are increasing each year.
