Special Needs
Hi Everyone,
I've been asking for good places to live. We've been directed to Mahtomedi and Stillwater so far. We realize both areas have good schools but our last requirement is for special needs provision, speech therapy etc. Which one would be the best. Or are there any other areas that would suit our needs?
Again looking for homes between $300-$450K, Victorian maybe, small town, lakes, parks.
Thanks again

There will be services in both districts for special needs/speech therapy. I don't have any information on what exactly they offer however. Most districts have a Director of Special Education and that would be a good person to call to see what programs are in place, etc. to start.

What other kind of special needs are you needing besides ST??? Yes, Mahtomedi is very good, White Bear Lake schools are also very good...........all in all, MN schools are great........Mahtomedi and Stillwater tend to have a bit higher cost of living, but there are parts where it isnt so pricey.

Are you trying to get rid of the British accent? I kind of like it!
Seriously though, we have our kids in the Lakeville school district (ISD 194). My daughter has autism and she gets speech therapy every day. We're quite impressed and she (my daughter, Amelia), has made great strides since beginning last fall.
If you would like, I can speak to the speech therapist and ask about programs for kids with a specific need for speech therapy.
Let me know,
Robert

Hi Robert,
Can't lose it unfortunately, tried for 6 years so far but the accents as strong as ever (as you found out the other day!).
Yes we have 2 kids with autism and have had very poor/no services here which is the main factor why we wish to leave. Cost....commute.....too hot....I could go on!
So we're looking for districts that will definitely have ST and other services to support our two boys with their special needs.

MAZZER!
Lakeville is THE school disctrict for kids with autism. It is nationally ranked!
AND, you'd get to be my neighbor! Just think: I buy huge fillets of cod, beer batter and fry with proper chips, wrap it in REAL newspaper (the ink runs too!) You'll be in heaven!
Hahahahaha - I'm having such a good time tonight.

Would you want a BIG Time soccer fanatic as a neighbor?
Fish and chips sounds good. My wife does a good fryup!
Well we're checking Lakeville out right now!
What are the other local areas like Robert? Burnsville, Apple Valley, Savage and Prior Lake

Oh, the surrounding areas are good - but we're really talking about the school system here. How old are your kids? I can put you in contact with the right person so you can decide for yourself.
I'd love to have a crazy-soccer-fan-neighbor!

Hey Robert, the kids are 8, 7 and 5. My two boys are autistic and they're the youngest.
Matthew my 5 year old will be going into Kindergarten next year.
Regarding commute times, what's it like to get up to Eden Prairie/Mntka during the winter time?

Eden Prairie and Minnetonka from Lakeville? 12-15 minutes. In bad weather or bad traffic? 20-25 minutes. In bad weather and bad traffic? 30-35 minutes.
I have it down to a science.
Let me talk to the folks at Lakeville and see where the best school for your little ones can be found!
