One thing that is really unique to the Twin Cities area is the city lakes and trail system. I just have not seen anything remotely close to what we have here in any urban area I have visited.

I agree the winters are horrible and I sure do miss having an interesting landscape - hills, mountains, ocean, etc. I have made my DH promise that we will not die here because while I found there to be many positives to the Twin Cities, I need to experience living somewhere else in my lifetime.

Because of my husband's job, we moved to Lakeville, MN from Baton Rouge, Louisiana one year ago. My husband grew up in Plymouth, MN and I in Louisiana and we are "always" comparing the two states. My husband could not take the heat and humidity in Louisiana and I can't take the long, cold winters in Minnesota. I've heard about "Minnesota Nice" but it's a far cry from "Southern Hospitality". Boy, am I homesick!

There's a big world out there - go and explore it. Only then will you be able to determine where "home" is.

Great point, Cajun Girl. The "Best Place To Live In The US" is different for everyone. There is no universal right answer.

I hate the winters of the midwest in IA/ MN and I'm from here! I know the East Coast has bad winters too though.

Very true! And as people grow they may change as well. Moving is a wonderful experience to get out there and see the world...

Home is different for all of us, everyone has different opinions as to what's best for them. We do not like Minnesota and WISH we could go NOW. But the housing market has trapped us and probably many others that wish to get out of here.....

The housing market is nasty everywhere right now. I'm guessing that it is putting peoples' plans on hold all over the country.

Talking Moving out of MN

I am a lifelong resident of Minnesota with a short stay in Illinois after college. I can tell you that my fiance and I are moving to south Florida. I love Minnesota, but I am tired of the winters here. When we were kids, we had snow to play on, now all we have are negative temps. Minnesota really is a nice place, but after 28 years here it is time for a change. I love Florida, always have, and I am excited to head out on the 8th for Fort Lauderdale. Best of luck to the original poster, I hope you enjoy success in all you do.

Bloom where you're planted. Happiness is a state of mind, not a state. Good luck to you, 21 is the perfect age to stretch your wings. However, you create your own contentment no matter the environment.

People from Minnesota are pretty mellow. Nobody's getting too riled up about your comments, which are kind of extreme but they're true for you, so it's good to get it off your chest. My family on one side is from Minnesota, so I've halfway lived there, but haven't been back in years. The interesting thing about the upper midwest is it's character-building. You're cold, you suffer, you shovel, you work, and there are no sunset ocean views. You go to the lake in the summer and suffer with mosquitoes. It's a state where people work hard and they don't seem to expect the moon. The kind of values that will serve you well, the rest of your life, wherever you live. Good luck to you.
