Relocating to Rochester, MN for the Short-term
If you are relocating to Rochester, MN for a temporary job (e.g., residency, fellowship, contract work, etc.) consider RENTING. I know too many families (and singletons) who bought homes in this city and experienced huge financial burdens because of it. There was a time back in 1999, when it was difficult to get even an apartment in this city and homes were selling within minutes of listing, but those times have changed and the developments that were manufactured at a rapid pace (esp. in the NW side) far exceed the need for housing in this city. If you know that your time in this city is temporary, renting is smart! Too many people I know have been "stuck" with a home in Rochester or have had to sell theirs for FAR below what they paid, just to "get out." Please consider renting when you move to Rochester. You can find beautiful homes to rent (not just condos and apartments). And in the end, you will secure your freedom by renting. In this market--it's all turned upside down! And renting is the new "buying".
