Default Lake Pepin

[quote=uptown_urbanist;7173294]
And, fun fact, water skiing was invented on Minnesota's Lake Pepin? (not really a lake, but the widening of the Mississippi.) You'll find plenty of snow everywhere here, not to mention plenty of water options (small lake, big lake, Great Lake, rivers, etc.)

"Lake Pepin is a naturally occurring lake, and the widest naturally occurring part of the Mississippi River.

If you're looking for a smaller city, I'd recommend Fergus Falls. It has around 14,000 residents and is located on Interstate 94. It's one hour away from the Fargo-Moorhead Metropolitan Area (100,000 people) and two and a half hours away from Minneapolis.

Fergus Falls has a fantastic downtown area with restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques and an art gallery is opening soon, too! In the downtown area, there's even a riverwalk which is beautiful in the summer!

For education, there's the public school system which is in the process of remodeling/expanding the middle school. Or, if a private school is what you're looking for, there's Hillcrest Luthern Academy (High school) and Morning Sun and Our Lady of Victory (both elementary).

The economy in Fergus Falls doesn't seem to be affected by what's going on in the news. The hospital has a new cancer center under construction and a health foods manufacturer has just announced that they will open a new facility! A new Wal-Green's is set to open sometime this Spring (which is in the beautiful downtown area). There's many big box stores in Fergus Falls as well. Target, Wal-Mart, Home Depot and others all have locations here.

There's dozens of parks in Fergus Falls, too! The largest and newest would be De' Lagoon which has around ten soccer fields, five baseball fields (one with a nice outdoor stadium), beach access and camping. For swimming in town, there's also Pebble Lake. Since Fergus Falls is in the heart of lakes country, there's hundreds of likes around the city in any direction.

I'd love to talk with you more about the City of Fergus Falls if you're interested! Feel free to shoot me an email at contact[at]fergusforum.com.

Bemidji in northern Minnesota should be on your list of consideration. My wife and I moved here two years ago from East Texas and absolutely love it! I was surprised at the growth of this regional center as I had been here 17 year prior to the move. It has a state university, a great state park on the north end of Lake Bemidji, amazing trails, small town feel, yet has some great shopping and restaurants. The Scandinavian heritage in this part of the country rivals the museums of DC, in my opinion. Ok, I'm half ways joking about that. What I like about Bemidji is it centrality in the state. It is an easy jog over to Duluth or to Grand Forks, ND. Winnepeg is a day trip away and is simply awesome to visit. The north shore of Lake Superior is right there (inspiring scenery)! Plus, the museums and big city stuff (crime, traffic, mass humanity) is a drive away as well.

Fergus falls is a nice town. It's along the interstate like what 45 minutes from Fargo and 2.5 hours from the Twin Cities. Plus they got bison burgers

Default What!?!?

This is not right!
Quote:
(1) Duluth, MN
(2) Moorhead, MN (on boarder with Fargo, ND)
(3) St Cloud/Sartell, MN
(4) Rochester, MN
Duluth and Saint Cloud should not be in the top 4.

I really like dinkytown but I'm still young.

I think Stillwater would be a great choice for your move. Stillwater is often referred to as the "birthplace of MN". They have a great public school system, and very low crime.

The only drawback will be your proximity to Wisoncsin.
