A friend of mine lives near Greenbush, MN which is straight west of there some 50-60 miles. They raise sheep because the farm land there isn't very good for crops. They love it there; but have a problem with wolves and coyotes at times and have lost a fair amount of sheep some years to wolves and coyotes. DO check with the locals about the farmland there and also about the predators if you are thinking of having horses or other livestock.

I would recommend Thief River Falls, Grand Rapids, or Bemidji. All get you away from the big cities, but still have healthy industry. Baudette is a great fishing and hunting destination, but is pretty darned remote.

Actually, the stats show that it's on the decline.......and, by the way, it never was any worse than that of Warroad, which is well known for it's access to anything!!

Smile Inaccuracies

First, I do live in Baudette (okay, I'm actually outside the city limits, but it's still my address) and I've lived here for more than 20 years. Today was the first time I've been to this website and was aghast at the inaccuracies in the city data info and also that of some of the people posting on this forum. Both definitely need an update!
Baudette is a small community of about 1100, Lake of the Woods County has a population of aprox. 5,000 year-round residents. But, on any given day, the number of people in the area is many times that, because tourism is HUGE up here. Winter tourism is just as big, if not more so, as summer. It is an outdoorsman's paradise!
True, shopping and cultural activities are very limited locally, but, they are available in abundance within a scenic drive of 2 and 1/2 hours or less. This is missed in the data because it does not tell you the closest city of size is actually Bemidji which is only 100 miles. It's not a big city, but also as a tourist area and regional center has many of the amenities you'd expect to find in a much larger city. Grand Forks, ND, is abt 175 miles & is the largest city in that state! AND....Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, is only 135 miles and exceeds Minneapolis/St Paul in cultual & shopping & dining venues. Winnipeg has a population of aprox. 1,000,000.
The school system is good and has a track record of graduating students that go on to succeed in life. There has been only one school campus in the county since the early 1970's, with all-new facilities built in the early-mid 1990's. It sits on more than 60 acres and includes athletic fields, trails, etc. It's a very beautiful and functional campus.
Anyone who's thinking about this area should make a point of visiting and spending enough time to get to know the area first.

My grandparents had a cattle ranch in Baudette for 20 years, until my gandpa died 9 years ago. The closest 'city' would be International Falls. Baudette itself is an extremely small town, but booms with tourists during fising season. It is INCREDIBLY cold. If I were to make a guess about the crime up there, it would mostly be from narcotics of some sort, or domestic violence (but - even today, i can't imagine either of those being too rampant). Grandpa's ranch was so close to the Canada border, we could see a Canadian flag from his field.

Haha I know but I just hate it when people from Warroad think they are so high and mighty.
