My old roommate grew up there. I will see if I can get him on here to answer later.
I just know that it is way up on the border of Canadia. Winters will definatly be much worse than anywhere in Washington state. Probably a good area for snowmobiling. Deer hunting is most likely good around there also. I would guess there is not too many job opportunities available in such a small town, far from any city. Crime should be very low.

Baudette is very far North. Up in Northern Minnesota you can be a few miles form town, but yet have many acres of your own. I have a friend that is only 3 miles from town, a town of 10,000. He has deer in his back yard. He goes deer hunting and bear hunting on his own land.
I have found that the real Northern towns seem to be too far from anything. The Northern towns that I have seen are nice, but also very cold in the winter. Have you ever heard of the saying that International Falls is the Icebox of the country?
I have been to Warroad and the surrounding areas. A big employment oppertunity for them is Polaris, Marvin Windows, and a plant that makes hockey sticks.(hockey is a big sport up north)

I have now lived in northern mn for 5 years about 50 miles south of baudette. Baudette is a nice place with an abundance of opportunity. It is just a rock throw away from canada and close to some of the best fishing Minnesota offers (lake of the woods, Rainy lake). Deer season is a holiday in northern MN. Some schools actually give students days off for the opening day of the deer hunting season. The land in the area is beautiful, the winters are cold just like the rest of MN summers are nice MN doesnt see that much humidity but it does get warm at times. Any other questions let me know.

You'll definitely achieve your goal of being far from any city should you move to Baudette. The nearest Wal-Mart (I think...unless there's one in Roseau?) would be in Bemidji...about 100 miles away. Oh, wait...actually there's one in Fort Francis, Ontario, just across the river from International Falls, which is about an hour to the east of Baudette.
Land is relatively cheap, especially if you're not on a lake. I don't know enough about horses to know what kind of land is ideal for them, but I would bet 40 acres in Northern MN is a lot cheaper than it is in Washington.
As mentioned above, you'd be in the midst of world-class fishing. Lake of the Woods is one of the best walleye fisheries in North America. Deer hunting, ice fishing and snowmobiling are also popular activities.
Yes, the winters are cold. You will need to find something to do in the winter (i.e., ice fishing or snowmobiling) or you will die a slow and painful death ala cabin fever.
The town of Baudette itself is pleasant enough. They recently built a skate-park if your kids are into that. I've never lived there, but overall it seems like your typical, quiet small town.
Also mentioned above, the major employment in the area (other than businesses that cater to fishermen and tourists) are located to the west in Warroad and Roseau.

As mentioned, there are a few big manufacturers in the area ("area" being a loose term). Arctic Cat is also around there somewhere I think. Horses will do fine (my uncle has horses in Koochiching county). Deer hunting, fishing is good, and Canada is nearby. Bear hunting if you're into that, grouse, ducks, etc. No mountains or even good hills, but lots of trees (pines primarily, fir, popple, birch). Blueberries if you know where to go.
Definitely rural, and easy to get some land, just do your searching locally for better prices. Move before winter and ask your neighbors what to buy, they'll be happy to tell you what you need. One thing, it's very dry there this year so good hay for your horses may be expensive, but there aren't many mosquitoes!
Crime is low, since everybody recognizes most everybody's vehicles. Bemidji has some theft issues due to unemployment in the neighboring Indian Reservations, but that's about it.
If you want to be as far from neighboring towns as possible, you might want to look at Waskish or Margie. Not many jobs there though unless you're a logger. If you need a few more job options, try Blackduck.

Baudette is great
I was born and raised in central Minnesota, but on weekends and vacations my dad would take us to Baudette. When I married i moved up to Baudette. I later moved to Florida and I am currently in the process of moving back there, I should be beginning my journey in late spring.
The crime rate is very low and what little there is consists of small burglary, and that is about it. The school system is awesome, I currently have a son that attends Lake of the Woods School, grades K-12 are in one building. The town is small with 2 grocery stores and an old time Main Street. I highly recomend the place to me it is the best place there is. The population is under 2,000 and the hunting and fishing are great! I hope you enjoy your trip, if you have any questions I would be glad to help if I can.
