Having lots of snow is a way of life for us in the northwoods. The economy livelihoods of many residents depend on consistent snowfall.

I was born and raised in Eagan, MN and lived there 23 years. I moved to Chicago after college because I had a hard time finding a job pre-graduation having no work experience. I would agree that there isn't a big draw to Chicago from the MN crowd by any means. Most Minnesotans I know feel a sense of pride of MN, have strong ties to family, and maintain a small and close network of friends from childhood/HS/College.
Chicago is more of a place for people looking to advance their careers quickly, or looking to live an urban lifestyle.
From what I've learned in Chicago for the last 3 years is that no one in their 20-30 somethings downtown Chicago are actually FROM Chicago, they're all transplants from various midwestern states, and every so often you get your east coast people as well. A lot of people here are fairly new to the city so many more are much more willing to make new friends than I would say in MN. There's a lot of Michigan and Ohio transplants I think due to the bad state economies and unemployment rates in those states. I'd say I really don't run into too many former Minnesotans in Chicago as often as I do surrounding states (WI, IN, IA, MO, MI, OH).

I would guess that most people who leave that grew up in Minnesota go south just to experience a different way of living, different culture and just to see what it is like to go outside in the winter months without freezing...but most people who were raised in Minnesota return for one reason or another, or so it seems

My husband was born and raised in Brainerd.
We came back to be closer to his parents, but he had forgotten how cold it got here. We had moved from Idaho which is a much milder climate.
I absolutely hate the cold. I'm a southern girl and I dread the Minnesota winters.
We have been trying to move back to Tennessee for the last five years.
Different circumstances have just kept us here.
My family is all in Tennessee.
I'm really hoping that this last winter will be our last one here.
I dread going through another one.

Two completely different groups of people who leave MN ( retirees and younger people who still work )
I'm betting there is a big difference in destinations chosen between those two groups.
