Default Commute times to Moorhead......

Hubby got a job (hallelujah!!!! ) in Moorhead and we will be moving there in a week. At first we will be living in a townhome but we are looking for a house with some small amount of property with it....... one that strikes our fancy is up in Shelly.... would this be too much of a commute? Hubby was commuting over an hour here in the Atlanta area (we have very long commute times here) so the time alone isn't too much of an issue...... but we know the weather will be an issue. We are both displaced Northerners ........ so snow isn't new to us......

So........... do people in MN/ND commute distances like this? Is it practical/wise in that region?

Yes, people do commute an hour in to the FM area. Many people live in the lakes area (Lake Park, Detroit Lakes) year round and drive in each day. There are couples where 1/2 works in Grand Forks and the other 1/2 in Fargo, and they live in Hillsboro and split the distance. It's a straight shot down highway 75, so it's not the most difficult drive in the region. But yeah, there are going to be days when it's not going to be easy.

Shelly is 40 miles North of Moorhead - So during good weather it will be a 45 min drive, however in bad weather expect easily over 1 hour and also remember that NW MN does not take care of there roads in winter. Plus it is also a 2 lane hwy so you may get stuck going 40 mph for 10 miles behind another. (quite common up there).

If I were you I would consider Detroit Lakes, MN as it about the same distance and on the interstate (MUCH better road conditions) (10) and is absolutely beautiful not including all that Detroit lake has to offer - boating fishing, snowmobiling and the list goes on. There is really nothing in Shelly except for sugar beets, potato fields, and flat (really reaaaaallllyyyy falt land).
