I've been wondering if it was the "Minnesota Nice" that made the people pitch in to help the recent bridge collapse?
The police and disaster teams have praised the those on the scene for not panicking and helping to save others. Is this normal for all areas of the country or was this just because it's MN?

Very touching column in the Strib which was originally an Editorial from one of the Chicago newspapers. It basically asked what they in Chicago can do to help, but then answered itself by saying that of any part of the country, Minnesotans will pitch in and help ourselves. That is the way we are.
I really enjoyed reading it. I lived in Chicago for many years, and it was nice to my old hometown showing that kind of respect to my new hometown.
Minnesotans tend to be the most philanthropic people in the country (data proves this). We saw it with peoples' time and effort when the bridge collapse, and we'll see it again when we all need to pitch in and get this bridge rebuilt.
Don't get me wrong, I think people in all areas of the country would help and lend a hand. I can't think of an area I've lived where people have lost that instinct. But in Minnesota, is it understood that is just what you do. In other parts of the country where I've lived, the helping hand sometimes comes with a desire for accolodes or a string attached (you owe me one, buddy).
Here - it is purely about helping. I hope we don't ever lose that.

Agreed, Lindenin. I, too, hope that we never lose that trait.

Where did you used to live in MN, and where did you move back to in MN?
Maybe the difference is because of all the out-of-towners moving in?

That's where my parents still live (just off Williston Road). Hopefully things are better.
I don't know a lot about Chanhassen, to be honest.

From all my experiences in all my travels outside of this state, MN has got to be one of the rudest states out there! I've lived here for 30 years and still have to say, where's the manners? Plain and simple. I'm constantly getting cut off in traffic even though I usually do about 5 over the speed limit or go with the flow. My wife and I when out in public always hold the door for others and about 30% of the time, get a thank you in return. Just the other day we were in line to buy a smoothie at MOA and there was two people in front of us, some woman comes from no where, backs into my wife almost knocking her over and doesn't even say excuse me or sorry. Then has the gull to cut in front of the two people that were waiting in front of us to buy her diet Dew she was so much in a hurry for, then sprints away with her nose in the air. Meanwhile were all looking at each other wondering what just happened. I see this kind of thing on a weekly basis. Plus the winters are horrible and never give us much ambition to do much when it's sub zero temps outside. Besides the people, MN is a beautiful state, but it's time for a change. I'm sorry but we want out of this state.

just moved to the twin cities a bit ago and i think there are often paralell communities in certain neighborhoods, native and non-natives. My wife and I have been able to make friends with our neighbors, however, they are virtually all from people who are non-natives.
It seems that native Minnesotans aren't interested in meeting new people and are often resentful of us our of towners. The reality is that on average, non-natives are better educated and a bit better off than the natives-- the only reason they are in the area is because of the great job opportunities.
