Default Greater Minnesota vs. Burbs: always this vile?

I don't know if any of you have been reading the comment boards on the Star Trib site responding to the Red River flood. As a outside observer from the west side of the Red, I am amazed by the nasty level of rhetoric between the two groups. Is it always that way, or is this just an aberration?

I wouldn't base any conclusions on the Star Tribune's commentors - their comment boards are regularly frequented by some of the nastiest, meanest people around.

They should have eliminated that comment feature long ago. Either that or they should only allow people to leave comments if they agree to leave a verified name, address and phone number...let's see what kind of comments they leave then.

The StarTrib forums can get nasty. There aren't any consequences over there for making such postings, or so it seems.

When I lived in the metro area, I didn't think all that much about other areas of the state unless I knew someone there or had some other connection, while the folks in the "outstate" areas sometimes feel envious of the Twin Cities, but not always. There's a lot to like about living in a rural area, or a small town.

There is some truth to it.

Most outstate Minnesotans feel our state legislature isn't as much Republican vs Democrat as it is rural vs metro.

The forums are the comment areas below various articles on the StarTrib site.

The Trib could and should moderate.

Each article's comment section is prefaced with the following:

Comments are subject to the site's terms of use and do not necessarily reflect the opinion or approval of the Star Tribune. Readers whose comments violate the terms of use may have their comments removed or all of their content blocked from viewing by other users without notification.

If they aren't actually moderating, it's their own problem.
