Winona, hands down. Beautiful area, tons of recreation, very friendly people. You can't find a better place.

I haven't traveled the state as much as I'd like but there are some towns that I thought were very nice. Here are a few...
New Ulm - this is a very quaint clean town with a lot of older homes that are well maintained (which is why I like it so much). If you live in most of the town, you can walk to the down town area. they have a golf course, lots of parks and the river area has lots of activities. You can tell that the people in this town have a lot of community pride. Buffalo - i like the downtown area in buffalo. it overlooks buffalo lake. for the area, it's not as flat as other towns. the town is clean. there are older homes but not as well maintained as new ulm. Excelsior - we'll this is probably the closest to New England that you are going to get (as far as i've seen). this is a small town on lake minnetonka. the downtown area is very quaint but also very busy. it has a town beach with a playground and park. there are probably more towns like them throughout MN. i just haven't discovered them yet. |

There are some parts of Northern MN that are nice... If I were going to live in the TC area I'd probably choose St. Paul myself. I don't like suburbs and I prefer St. Paul over Minneapolis at this point. It's a matter of personal preference, though. As with any state, there are good and bad places in MN.

I'm actually pretty happy here in the Grand Rapids area. We're surrounded by thousands of acres of forests and countless (clear) lakes...the people are friendly, the town is clean and safe and we have a decent array of shopping/restaurants/services to choose from for a town this size. The economy isn't the best (though not as bad as it could be, I guess) and of course the winters are long, but hey, this IS in northern Minnesota after all!

Love South Western Minneota.
Houston, Bluff County, River Root Area. Gorgeous bluffs, streams, rivers, and farms. |

Probably Fergus Falls or Grand Rapids. Virginia and the surrounding area is gorgeous, but the town is really struggling.
If I were young and childless, I'd probably love Winona, but it didn't strike me as a very kid-friendly city. Much more of a college town. |

Makinen. I grew up there, and its a beautiful coutry town, out in the woods. I grew up on Mudhen Lake, a tiny lake with less than 20 houses. Perfect way to grow up, 60 miles north of Duluth completely surrounded by nature. Beautiful.
