You hear the thicker accents in outstate MN. I am most familiar with the Brainerd Lakes region where the accent is a bit more noticeable. I feel that I have a modified Upper Midwest accent as well. (Lived in the Midwest over 20 years)

Years ago, some Minnesotans relocated and settled in Wasilla AK. Sarah Palin sounds more Minnesotan than what you hear in the movie "Fargo."

I concur!! And I thought I was the only one who observed this about Sarah Palin!

Another common "minnesotan" thing is ... "Gosh" and "Golly". That is so Palin-esque.

I don't think Sarah Palin sounds Minnesotan at all...her accent is a different beast entirely

Honestly, I hated the movie. I live in greater minnesota, and we don't speak like that. Although, maybe they do further north as I live in West Central Minnesota. That's not to say that we don't have any type of accent. (I actually though the Grumpy Old Men franchise was pretty close in the older generations). I say yeah all the time. But the Fargo version, IMO, is way over the top. We do usually say pop instead of soda; we also say duck, duck, gray duck-not duck, duck, gray goose, and apparently we are the only people that do so. I suppose we could sit and debate on that one all day.

^ This. Especially up North or people who are of an older generation. Minneapolis is just like every other big city, where you get a bit of everything. I go to Boston a lot and have encountered more people who DON'T have the "typical" Bawstahn accent than people who do.

Same with here. I don't recall ever hearing anybody sounds as ridiculous as they do in Fargo.

Dead on with the "borrow" bit. As an example, my parents are both educated and trained professionals and I am constantly correcting them for misusing it.

All Minnesotans have a distinct accent although it is more noticeable outside of the metro area. I notice it quite a bit with conversations from people in the outskirt metro areas too, like Faribault, Cambridge, Forest Lake, Princeton, etc. I've heard people with humorously exaggerated accents but not quite to the level of the movie Fargo.
