Default Alexandria, MN: what's it like to live there?

My husband and I are considering relocating to MN and spent a few days in Alexandria a year ago. Really liked it. What do you like/dislike about it?

Alright, here's an unbiast (well...maybe) report from a lifelong Alexandrian.

Alexandria is growing, growing, and growing. However, despite our growth, there is still a large amoumt of the "small town feel". We also have alot of amenities which make us a respected city. We have the "Minnesota nice" feel here, most of our population is very welcoming. But as with every town, there are a few that aren't.

I understand that you want to move here for retirement. In the summer, you can't get bored. Lakes galore, festivites every few weekends, restaurants with live entertainment (i.e. Bug-a-boo Bay, Eddy's Interlachen Inn) along with the AAAA theatre for plays and music.

Overall, Alexandria is a promising city that is always looking for new opportunities to expand while still having the "small town feel". The Viking Plaza mall will be renovated, according to today's paper, and addition to the Douglas County Hospital is under way, and talks of stores such as Applebee's, Kohls, and a few other have lingered around ton.

As a lifelong resident here, feel free to ask me any questions you have, I should have an answer!

Sincerely,
Kreg Anderson

Thanks for your post and invitation to ask you questions. Yes, Alex has grown. We visited there last summer. The time before I went through there was in the 60's. How long does it take you to drive to the Twin Cities? (say, downtown Mpls)

The norm is about 2:10, give or take ten minutes on weather, traffic, etc. I've can reach MSP airport anywhere between 1:50 and 2:15. Nice roads the whole way.

Alexandria is awesome. So many lakes, and nice people. Fun fun town.

Plus Brock Lesnar lives there.

Awesome fishing in and around Alex! Have a tiny cabin up there, and it would be sweet to live there permanently

It all depends on what you're looking for. I came to Alexandria from Duluth a couple of years ago, and honestly I'm bored out of my mind. While there are plenty of outdoor activities, Alex is somewhat lacking when it comes to culture, arts, and the like, which is why we're moving again. It would be a nice place to retire, I suppose, but I don't want to raise my daughter here.
