To get a good education you need to go where the better students are, they challenge you and since you can't flunk them all -profs in most places HAVE to teach down to the level of students.

That said, the best educated person I ever knew was an 8th grade dropout who had over 20.000 books on his checkout record at the St.Paul public library.

Didn't have much money but was a happy man.

People tend to hire others like them though, so you probaly have more chance at say-an elementary teacher job out of a state college than the U .
Most profs try to send THEIR kids to Carleton or Macalester etc.

It's bush league that Wingfoot claims that ANYWHERE in the world people know of University of Minnesota. That's a horrible statement. Same with NOBODY outside of MN knows of SCSU.... I think you can say that educational and HR institutions know of the U internationally, but I wouldnt say that "EVERYBODY OUTSIDE THE US KNOWS OF U OF M"-thats hilarious.

I'm not trying to say SCSU is better or just as good as UofM but I'm tired of people not realizing that SCSU isnt the little college that partied crazy in the early 90s.

Not a theory, I worked at major schools for many years.

My 8th grade dropout friend was a genius, not many are,
these type of people can't be stopped from learning, the rest of us
need all the help we can get.

The main goal of a good college education is to make you keenly aware
that education is a life life long process that never BUT never ends.
A major problem in the US is the millions of degree holders whose learning
ends upon graduation(if it ever started) who then walk around for the next 50 years
under the mistaken impression they are educated.

My wife found our friend dead in a chair in his apt. at age 83 with a German history book in his lap. The book was in German.

Not wishing to paint everyone here as a total idiot,it seemed pointless to say the conversation concerned those in positions where an knowledge of academia might be assumed.

I see not I should not have assumed that and acknowledge my failure to exclude Joe six-pack ,every rice farmer etc etc. and bow to your superior wisdom.

Why would you ever say that ANYWHERE in the world people know of the U of M and NOWHERE outside MN people dont know of SCSU.

That's all I'm wondering. Those are two stupid comments.
