When I was 10 I played in the Coon Rapids city league. I believe there were 6 teams and we played tackle in full pads. I would imagine the same is true for most other mid-sized suburbs in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area. Where I live now in South Minneapolis there are several youth teams practicing in every park at most hours it seems like. The teams I see range in age between 8-14 years and all are in full-pads as well. I would assume that means these kids are playing tackle football.

Programs like Roseau and Warroad are the exception to the rule. They are two of the most storied programs in the state.

Thanks slig. I guess it doesn't really matter in the end what school my son attends in MN, but just was wondering what the competitive high schools were for football. I'm all about keeping him in sports throughuot high school and he likes and thrives with football.

The quality of the program kinda depends on how good the High School team is. I started playing Wayzata youth football when I was in 4th grade and it was tackle and competitive. I had a really great experience...had former NFL players as coaches, played on really talented teams, and was even teammates with two current NFL players.
There were lots of teams and you didn't get kids playing the wrong position because of weight limits. Kids over the weight restriction would wear a black stripe on their helmet limiting them to line play. The coaches don't really play favorites but the talented kids will play the skill positions (QB, RB, WR, and LB).
I would say stick with youth programs associated with Wayzata, Minnetonka, Eden Prairie, Lakeville, Apple Valley, Burnsville, and maybe Hopkins.

Thank you Thrillhouse. What would you say of Orono's or Delano's youth football?

I lived in the Eden Prairie area for sometime and if you are into football or Hockey this school is a powerhouse!
I don't think they have lost a football game in how many years? Scholorships...how many of the students ratio scholorship do they have for just about everything.
