Marshall, MN is a great smaller town, about 12,000 people. There are some pretty nice smaller towns around that area that are between 200-5000 or so too.

New Ulm Mn is very nice .. about 15,000 pop
Try littler towns like Gibbon Mn under a 1000 .. getting about 50 miles out from the bigger towns like Mankato and such gives some awesome places to live ..

In the Northeast you have: Cloquet (12,000), Hermantown (9,000), Hibbing (16,000), Virginia (7,000) and along the shore you have Grand Marais (3,000) and Silver Bay (3,000).

Northcentral: Grand Rapids: (8,500) and Bemidji (13,000) Brainerd (13,500)

Northwest: East Grand Forks 10,000 or so.

Twin cities Area: Cambridge, Northbranch area 12-15,000

Southeast: HAstings, Redwing and Winona all about 15-18,000

Southcentral: Fairbault and Austin 12-18,000

Bemidji is nice. Some think Northfield is nicest place of its size in USA>
