Jobs on the Range/Ely
Seriously considering moving to Ely, MN but not finding any decent opportunities for employment. Expanded my search to places on the range within an hours commute, still not much! Any advice, suggestions, leads?????

It depends on what type of employment your looking for. There are a lot of manual labor jobs at the mines.

There is IT work in Eveleth if you have experience. Check out Cross-usa.com if you are so inclined.

Ely is a tough place to survive financially. My wife and I lived there for 8+ years, but when our first son was born, we had to get out. Broke our hearts to leave, but its very tough , especially if you have a family. I didn't mind working seasonally and having no health insurance but when the kids came along, we had to move back to the world. Really , you need to have connections and it helps to be a local. Its a very depressed
(economically) region. Even before the current climate, it was difficult, - now I can't imagine how people are making it there, but they are. If you want to live there bad enough you can find a way...at least you used to be able to find a way, I don't know anymore.
Good luck.

There have been reports in the Duluth paper that that mines are beginning ot hire people back again. Also, there are new mining companies exploring Nickel and Copper minerals near Ely. The company is called Duluth Metals.

Yes, it was reported on the news that the mines are starting to call back their laid off employees and that is good news.
However, there is a huge difference between calling back its laid off workers and hiring new workers.

Well, being called back is better than still being laid off. Once the mines are in up and runnning then you get the spin off businesses that benefit from the mines.
The work has always been cyclical on the range with the mines despite trying to "diversify" the area industry.

I know there are some in Ely working at the mines but the OP asked specifically about Ely. From my experience, the Ely economy is a bit separate from the Range, as it is on the other side of the Laurentian Divide and has a tourist dependent economy. Few are willing to commute the hour to Eveleth or Virginia given the winter. Does anyone know info. on the Ely economy in particular?
