Best Small town airports in MN
Hello Everyone-
I am a business traveler covering about half the US and I work from home. Because I love the outdoors and would not mind lowering my expenses, I have been thinking about moving away from the Twin Cities. Right now I have a 1 hr drive to the airport, but would not mind living in Grand Rapids, along the North Shore, or the Bemidji area.
I don't mind taking a extra flight to Mpls to hook up with a larger airline if necessary.
Also, what airports in MN have most direct flights to midwestern cities?
Thanks ahead of time for any replies!

Bemidji has a nice airport, I don't know if they have flights to other cities besides MSP though.
Marshall has a nice airport but transportation between Marshall and MSP is spotty.
Have you looked into Sioux Falls, SD? Do you have to stay in MN? They have a great airport there, 8 gates with a lot of connecting flight options.
Rochester would be another area to consider.

Gaaaaaahhhh! Stay away from Rochester "International" Airport. Flying in or out of there is pretty much a coin toss. I've had way too many flights to and from there cancelled out from under my butt at the last minute to ever recommend flying there. Fly to/from Minneapolis and get a shuttle or drive to Rochester. It's worth the extra time and money.

Duluth is building a brand new 60 million dollar airport and has flights to Vegas, Orlando, MSP (of course), Chicago, and Detroit. You have your choice of NWA/Delta, Alegiant, and United. You also have a good fixed base operator in Monaco Air, the longest runway in the state, the Air National Guard, a flight school through Lake Superior College along with Cirrus Design all at the airport.

That is great news on the Duluth airport. That really makes me look hard at the city and surrounding area. Also, I don't have to stay in MN or the cities I mentioned.

You are going to have inclimate weather and/or fog and depending on who you are flying with, you may have a wait and miss your connecting flights. The weather on one end of the state can be totally different than another or even in the middle, or east, or west...

Bemidji gets my vote. I grew up there and since I have moved the airport has gone through some major changes.
I will be flying in there for the first time in 10 years this December.

St Cloud has a nice Regional Airport. They are pushing hard for International status, but the economic times have squashed that idea.

The only Minnesota Airport that get service to other cities other then MSP are Rochester and Duluth. Fargo and Grand Forks as well but not sure if that interests you. Otherwise your options would be a commute to MSP from St. Cloud, Brainerd, Hibbing/Theif River Falls/ International Falls.
