Modular Homes???...
Does anybody have any good recommendations on a modular home company?
Does anybody know how much a basic setup (house cost, setup, etc.) would cost, excluding the land? Thanks.

A very good modular home company is SIPsmart Building Systems. www.sipsmart.com
You can get a modular home for around 25k, and take a 2 day installation course for 300 dollar.
The modular sections are full complete, and if you don't want to build the home yourself, you can hire a local Modular home builder. The insulated panels modular homes are available from 600sq feet to 3000. If I remember they have cheaper options too.
These system are very DIY friendly and very "green". The cost savings from engergy is huge. Not air leaks, no wasted hot air, no wasted cool air. And the footprint land is small, so you don't waste extra money with expansive homes.

We have a Wick (out of WI). It came it 3 sections-we didn't order it, build it-we bought it from the builder it was his spec home. We love it-it's wide open, spacious and so energy efficient. Our gas budget is $46 a mo. for 2200 sqft and that's keeping it at 70 deg.
We did look into others years ago and with land,2 car gar. we figured $200K.

I'm not sure what your tastes/budget are, but there's been a ton of cool stuff going on in recent years (technology/design-wise) in the pre-fab/modular home industry; however, I think the more "highbrow"-designed homes are still significantly more costly than traditional home-building (in stark contrast to the affordability draw of the more traditional modular/prefab market). I'd be curious to know (1) if any companies have been successful in making the more modern/tech-advanced designs affordable for a range of folks, and (2) if there are many local companies/builders doing a lot of work with this market (one Mpls-based company I know of is FlatPak, although at $200-$300/sq ft average it's pretty out-of-reach for most people).
Another prefab company that has impressed me, albeit still pretty expensive, is Bensonwood Homes (I like their 'This Old House' collection).

Before we moved we moved to Duluth, we bought a 2.5 acre lot just outside of Duluth (Rice Lake Township). We then toured the local modular home places. Found a nice 1500sqft home. Bought it for under $80,000 (2004 price). Had a walkout basement built along with a 3 car garage and motor home garage. Cost less than $200,000.
This house is well insulated. The foundation was built using foam blocks with space in the middle for concrete. Solid insulated basement walls.
We now have a nice house in the woods with a nice view off the deck (weather permitting ). There are a bunch of fishing lakes located within 45 minutes (we don't "do" Lake Superior )
We get a "piece" of the fall hawk migration since we're on a ridge several miles from Hawk Ridge. Have had "kettles" of hawks and eagles circling over the ridge. Summer time we have humming birds (2 feeders for them). Fall and winter we have Chickadees and an occasional woodpecker (3 feeders and suet). The deer love to eat the hosta's and cedars.
Sometimes during the winter we'll get a 2' snow fall with an east wind off the lake. Then the 4-wheeler with plow get a workout. Sometimes the snow blower gets called into action.
Ah, the theater of seasons....

I have one that I would avoid:
Hudworth Homes out of Hudson, WI. They have a rating of "F" with the WI BBB and after dealing with them I can see why.
