Default Yauh, Sure, You Betchca (Does anyone say that anymore in Minnesota)?

Being from Minnesota many people ask me about my accent. They think I am from Sweden or some place like that. When I go back to Minnesota I hear many people who talk Minnesota and have a strong accent, especially in the rural area or small towns.

So, do you hear the Minnesota accent and do you say, "Yauh, sure, you betchca" ??

I'll have to be honest - I said it the other day, in all seriousness. I caught myself too and laughed a little.

Seems to be more of a north-western Minnesota and eastern North Dakota saying. Back in the Fargo/Moorhead area people did that occasionally when I was there but not that often.

Ironically, The Minnesota and North Dakota tends to vary from person to person. Some people have no northern drawl, some have a middle of the road drawl and others have extemely noticeable accents.

I dont think people in the Twin Cities proper to tend to do that but that might be because I havent that much time there. But I have been in the Twin Cities to know the accent there is different then the Moorhead area or up in northern Minnesota.

Seems like around the Twin Cities they tend to have as many longer R's then O's actually. Unlike central and northern Minnesota where they tend to have long O's.

I say it in jest from time to time. Usually I say it when people make fun of my accent. I've lived in Utah for almost a year now and I've clung onto those Minnesota words that sound the funniest. Usually snow, about, mitten, and mountain.

As someone whose Mom came from minnesota and has always visited family both in the city and out a few counties in the country, it seems stronger in the rural areas. My uncle living in Loring Park doesn't have a very strong Minnesota accent even tho he has always lived in the state. My other uncles and aunts in rural Goodhue and Rice county had very thick accents. Of course most of the people who have moved from out of state would be living in or near the city.

Maybe the thicker accents in Goodhue and Rice counties are due to the heavy Norwegian influence in the area?

In my area of the Twin Cities, I only hear it when we Minnesotans are trying to make fun of ourselves. Very rarely in normal conversation.

That's very true. Even though I probably have an MN accent myself, I can notice that some here have it much stronger than others.

Younger people generally have less pronounced accents.
