Neighborhoods of Rochester
I'm going to be working an internship at IBM for the summer. I've been looking online for apartments. A lot of them that I've found that are on the less expensive side are near St. Mary's hospital, and Kutzky park. I was just hoping to get a feeling for the area, and to find out if it's really some place I want to live.
Does anyone in the area have any thoughts on this part of Rochester? Should I pursue some of the options in the area, or should I look elsewhere and pay a bit more?

i'm still relatively new to Rochester, so bear that in mind.
Kutzky Park - i love the houses there (like 1920's old houses) but they are quite close to each other without much yard space and sometimes parking space may be limited. because it's lose to the hospitals, there are a lot of rental there... this area probably have more police reports than some other parts, but from what i heard, they're trying to clean up the area so it may not be as bad now. when we were looking at houses to buy this past few months, i keep wanting to go there because i love old houses, but we just didn't like the vibe and not what we're looking for. but we may have very different lifestyle, and since you're only renting short term, it'd be different to our needs (buying a single home family, to stay for at least 2-5 years).
having said that, once you have something you are interested in, you can always call the local sheriff Darrel Hildebrant at 507-281-6056 and give him the address, and he can tell you if any police reports have been filed within a few blocks of the address in the past year. we did that when we were looking for our apartment and now buying our house. he's very nice. he can't' advise you what area to avoid, but he can tell you how many reports have been filed. 3 years ago, we checked with one apartment in the Kutzky Park area (on 11th ave), and it has 30+ of reports... but things may have changed.
like i said tho, it depends on what you're looking for - somewhere quiet? somewhere kid friendly? somewhere with more young people? what kind of budget do you have in mind?

Also, there is a new website being developed that gives you a perspective on crime in Rochester, MN.
Rochester Minnesota Crime Information, Maps, and Reports | RochesterCrime.org
(forgive me for not knowing how to post a link, heh)
It is a free site to let you look up any neighborhood and map out the crime incidents reported around an address, or map out types of crimes all around the city.
Feel free to use it and share it with anyone you think would be interested.

I was in Rochester less than a year but I thought the Apts near Ibm were ok to live in,it also depends on your buget.I Liked that area of town because it had a Target near by and bus lines did go by my apt. complex. Now the area your talking about seemed very croweded to me.good luck in your search.
